• Alberta

  A contracting business that negotiates or concludes a contract with you in person away from its place of business and takes money before all the work on your home is done needs a prepaid contracting licence.

  All residential builders must have a licence to obtain permits for new homes, and the New Home Buyer Protection Act requires home warranty coverage on all new residential homes.

• British Columbia

  Anyone building a new home as a general contractor, developer or building envelope renovator must first become a licensed residential builder with BC Housing, and new homes built by licensed builders need home warranty insurance.

• Manitoba

  Under The New Home Warranty Act, building permits for new homes can’t be granted unless the builder has arranged coverage with an independent warranty provider.

  Door-to-door home-improvement sellers must be licensed by the Consumer Protection Office. Ask to see the licence and check that it’s still valid.

• Ontario

  Renovating an existing home generally doesn’t require an HCRA builder licence: HCRA says renovations or upgrades typically don’t make a home “new”. Ontario advises checking references, WSIB coverage and trade certificates before you hire.

  All new-home builders and sellers must be licensed by the HCRA, and new homes come with warranty coverage backed by Tarion.

• Quebec

  Anyone who does residential renovation work for you must hold an RBQ licence, and that licence must include the subclasses required for the work you are hiring them for.

  Workers in the construction industry covered by Act R-20 need a CCQ competency certificate. The Act excludes maintenance, repair, renovation and alteration work done for an individual, on their own account and for strictly personal, non-profit purposes, on a dwelling they live in. The contractor still needs an RBQ licence.

  Contractors who build or sell new residential buildings must be accredited by the administrator of the mandatory Guarantee Plan for New Residential Buildings.

• Saskatchewan

  Direct sellers of home-renovation products or services are limited in how much they can require you to pay before the cancellation period ends, and the contract must include a “Buyer’s Right to Cancel” statement.
