Data sources

LokalMatch builds its location data from official open datasets. This page credits every source we use and reproduces the attribution its licence requires.

Why we credit our sources

The provinces and territories, cities and postal code areas on LokalMatch come from open datasets published by statistical agencies and other official bodies. Most of them are free to use commercially, but only on the condition that we say where the data came from.

This page is that credit. For each country we publish in, it names the datasets we use, links the licence they are published under, and reproduces the attribution wording that licence asks for. Where we changed the data, we say so.

How we use location data

  • Place names and coordinates fill our province, region and city pages.
  • Typing a postal code suggests the city to use on a request. It is always a suggestion you can change, never an official postal code lookup.
  • Populations decide which cities get their own page, and nothing else.
  • We don't republish the datasets themselves, and we don't use them to build address lists.
  • None of these sources endorses LokalMatch, and none of them checks or approves the pros listed here.

Location data in Canada

Postal code areas: adapted from Wikipedia, "List of postal codes of Canada" (A to Y), licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0), https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/. LokalMatch changed the data: only forward sortation areas whose municipality matches a LokalMatch city in the same province are kept, and rural forward sortation areas are not mapped.

City groupings follow Statistics Canada census metropolitan areas. Adapted from Statistics Canada, 2021 Census of Population, census metropolitan areas (table 98-10-0003). This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product.

Datasets we use

What this data does and doesn’t tell you

  • Typing a postal code suggests a city. It is a suggestion you can always change, not an official Canada Post lookup: only the first three characters are read, and rural areas are not mapped.
  • Census metropolitan areas group nearby municipalities for statistics. They are not municipal boundaries.

Geographic and population data from the U.S. Census Bureau (2026 Gazetteer Files; City and Town Population Estimates, Vintage 2025; American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates; 2020 ZCTA Relationship Files). Not endorsed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

What this data does and doesn’t tell you

  • ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are Census approximations of ZIP delivery areas, fixed at 2020. A ZIP code suggests a city; it is not an official USPS mapping and you can always change it.
  • Municipal townships that the Census counts as county subdivisions rather than places are not included.

Datasets we use

What this data does and doesn’t tell you

  • An outward code suggests a city. One outward code can cover several towns, so it is a suggestion you can change.
  • Populations come from different sources and years per nation, so they are not one series.
  • Northern Ireland postcodes (BT) are excluded: commercial use of them needs a separate Land and Property Services licence, so a BT postcode only resolves to Northern Ireland, never to a town.

What this data does and doesn’t tell you

  • Postal Areas are ABS approximations of Australia Post postcodes, not Australia Post data. Some postcodes are missing and edges can differ, so a postcode suggests a suburb and city you can change.
  • ABS approximations of administrative boundaries are for statistical use and are not legal boundaries.
