Unlike kits, each piece is made for one particular opening, stair or view, so the job starts with a careful site measure and ends with a fitting on site.

The main decisions are the metal itself (steel, aluminum or wrought iron), the finish that will protect it from rust through winters and road salt, and who handles each part of the work: fabrication in the shop, installation at the house, and any building work around it. When a piece serves as a guard, a stair or a structural support, the building code applies, and some designs need an engineer.

Steel vs aluminum vs wrought iron for custom railings and gates

Much of what is sold as wrought iron today is mild steel, shaped and welded to look like traditional forged work; true wrought iron is rare and mostly met when restoring old ironwork. The real choice for most homes is between steel and aluminum, with stainless steel for some modern designs.

  • Mild steel is strong, stiff and easy to weld, bend and repair, which makes it the usual choice for stringers, gates and ornate designs, but it rusts wherever its coating is breached.
  • Aluminum is lighter and doesn't rust, which suits balconies, pool areas and spots exposed to salt, but it is less stiff, so parts are often larger and harder to alter on site.
  • Stainless steel resists corrosion well and suits cable and minimalist designs, though it is more demanding to fabricate and finish.
  • Hand-forged details from a blacksmith give a period look for heritage houses and restoration work that production shops rarely match.
  • Weight matters for gates: a heavy steel gate needs sturdy posts, footings suited to frost and hinges sized for it, or it will sag and drag.

Galvanizing, powder coating and paint: protecting metalwork from rust

Outdoors, the finish decides how long metalwork stays sound. Hot-dip galvanizing immerses the finished steel in molten zinc, coating it inside and out, and the zinc keeps protecting the steel even where it gets scratched. Powder coating is a dry powder baked onto the metal into a hard, even layer of colour; it protects well until it chips. Applied together, galvanizing under powder coating combines the zinc's protection with the colour you choose. Paint is the easiest finish to touch up, but it needs the most upkeep.

  • Ask whether exterior steel will be galvanized, powder-coated or both, and how the surface is prepared first, since coatings fail early on poorly cleaned steel.
  • Both finishes are applied at specialized plants, so any cutting or welding done afterward leaves bare spots that need a proper touch-up.
  • Rust usually starts where water sits: at post bases, in welded joints, inside hollow tubes without drainage and where posts meet concrete.
  • Touch up chips with the matching paint before winter, when salt and meltwater work their way in.
  • Where aluminum or stainless meets plain or galvanized steel, isolating washers or fittings help prevent the faster corrosion that dissimilar metals can cause.

Custom metal guards, stairs and the building code

A decorative railing is still a guard as far as the building code is concerned. Part 9 of the National Building Code of Canada, or the provincial code based on it, governs where guards are required and sets their height, opening sizes, limits on climbable designs and the loads guards and handrails must resist; the railings page explains these points. For a fabricator, that means designing to the code in force at your address, showing it on the shop drawings and anchoring posts so the whole assembly takes those loads. Scrolls, curves and horizontal bars need particular care so they don't leave gaps a child could slip through or footholds to climb.

Steel stairs, stringers, posts and structural brackets fall under the code as well, and their design may need an engineer's review or seal. Your municipality decides whether a permit is required, and in Quebec, a contractor installing railings, stairs or other building elements needs a licence from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec covering that work, which you can check in its online register.

Shop drawings and site measurement for custom metal fabrication

Steel can't be trimmed on site like wood, so measuring usually happens twice: roughly for the quote, then precisely once the surfaces the metal attaches to are final, such as finished stairs, tiled floors or a poured slab.

  • First visit: the fabricator looks at the site, discusses style and use, and takes preliminary measurements.
  • Final site measure: exact dimensions on finished surfaces, including stair slopes, out-of-level floors, post locations and what each post will be fastened to.
  • Shop drawings: detailed drawings showing dimensions, profiles, spacing, connections, anchors and finish, which you review and sign before any steel is cut.
  • Engineering: where a piece is structural, or a guard's loads must be demonstrated, an engineer reviews or seals the design, and the drawings may accompany a permit application.
  • Fabrication and finishing: parts are cut, welded and ground in the shop, then sent for galvanizing or powder coating.
  • Installation: pieces are set, shimmed, anchored and checked for level and firmness, and any field cuts or welds are touched up.

Metal fabrication vs installation: who is responsible for what

Some shops design, build and install; others only fabricate and leave installation to a general contractor, or install onto a stair or deck someone else built. Either arrangement works when responsibilities are clear. Weld quality and finish defects belong to the fabricator, while a railing that works loose is usually an anchoring problem, which falls to whoever installed it and to the structure it was fastened to.

  • Agree on who takes the final measurements, since pieces built to someone else's numbers often don't fit, and the dispute is hard to settle afterward.
  • Settle who provides blocking, embedded plates or holes drilled in concrete, and when, so the installer doesn't arrive to find nothing solid to fasten to.
  • Ask whether welding will be done on site, since it requires fire precautions near wood, siding and insulation and can mark nearby finishes.
  • Get the finish and workmanship warranty in writing, including what voids it, such as field modifications or neglected chips.

Is wrought iron or aluminum better for an outdoor railing?

Most wrought iron railings today are steel, which is strong and easy to shape into ornate designs but needs a well-maintained coating to keep rust away. Aluminum doesn't rust and needs little care, but it is less stiff and harder to modify. Near salt or a pool, aluminum or galvanized steel is the safer bet.

Does a custom metal railing have to meet the building code?

Yes. Wherever a guard or handrail is required, a custom design must meet the same height, opening, climbability and strength requirements as any other railing under the code that applies where you live. Ask the fabricator to show how the design complies on the shop drawings.

What are shop drawings, and why should I approve them?

They are the fabricator's detailed drawings of each piece: dimensions, profiles, spacing, connections, anchors and finish. Approving them before fabrication is your chance to catch mistakes, since changes are easy on paper and difficult once the steel is cut and coated.

Is powder coating or galvanizing better for outdoor steel?

They do different jobs. Galvanizing protects the steel even where it's scratched, while powder coating gives a durable colour but lets rust start where it chips. For exposed exterior steel, many fabricators recommend galvanizing under the powder coat.

Can a new metal railing be installed on an existing deck or stair?

Often, if the structure can take the loads. The fabricator or contractor should check the framing, concrete or stringers where the posts will be anchored, and add blocking or reinforcement where needed before the railing goes on.
