Welders join and repair metal by melting it together, and for most homeowners the job means fixing something rather than designing it: a railing post snapped at its base, a gate hinge torn loose, a trailer tongue or ramp, a cracked snowblower frame, or a steel post in a renovation. A mobile welder brings a truck-mounted rig to your driveway, while a shop repairs pieces you bring in and takes on work that needs space, lifting gear or a sheltered setting.

The work looks simple, but it isn't a do-it-yourself job. Heat and sparks can start a fire hidden inside a wall after the welder has packed up, coated metal gives off harmful fumes, and anything that holds up a floor, goes on the road or keeps someone from falling has to be designed and welded properly.

MIG, TIG and stick welding: which process suits the repair

Welders choose a process for the metal, its thickness and condition, and where the work happens. A good welder explains that choice rather than using whatever machine happens to be on the truck.

  • MIG welding feeds wire through a gun inside a shielding gas and lays down fast, clean welds on steel and aluminum, but outdoors the wind can blow the gas away.
  • Flux-cored welding uses a similar wire gun with the flux inside the wire, which makes it better suited to outdoor and mobile work on steel.
  • TIG welding is slow and precise, suited to thin metal, stainless steel, aluminum and visible welds where appearance matters.
  • Stick welding is simple and portable, tolerates wind and less-than-perfect steel, and is common for mobile repairs on heavier steel.
  • Cast iron, found in old railings, machinery and stove parts, cracks easily under uneven heat and often calls for preheating or brazing by a welder experienced with it.

Mobile welding vs shop welding: what can be fixed on site

A mobile welder spares you from cutting out a railing set in concrete or towing a broken trailer, and most repairs to fixed railings, gates and equipment are done where they stand. A shop offers room to work, lifting equipment, tools for bending and cutting and shelter from the weather, which suits aluminum, fine TIG work, larger fabrication and anything that can be unbolted and brought in.

  • Send clear photos, rough dimensions and the type of metal if you know it, so the welder arrives with the right process and materials.
  • Mobile rigs usually carry their own power, but ask how close the truck needs to park to the work.
  • Expect grinding, sparks and noise, and move vehicles, pets and anything flammable away from the area beforehand.
  • Welding burns off paint, galvanizing and powder coating at the joint, so agree in advance on who refinishes the repair and how.

Weld repair or replacement for rusted railings, gates and hitches

Welding works well on sound metal that has broken, cracked or come apart at a joint. It works poorly on metal that rust has thinned, because the weld has nothing solid to fuse to and the metal beside it keeps failing. A welder should probe the surrounding metal before quoting and say frankly when a section, or the whole piece, should be replaced instead.

  • Repair makes sense for a broken weld, a snapped picket or bracket, a torn hinge mount or a crack in otherwise solid steel.
  • Replacement is usually wiser when posts are rusted through at the base, the metal flakes away, or earlier repairs keep failing.
  • A repaired guard still has to resist the loads the building code expects of it, so a weak patch on a balcony or stair railing isn't an acceptable fix.
  • Towing parts are safety-critical: many hitches are designed to bolt on, and welding to a vehicle frame can affect its strength, so follow the vehicle and hitch makers' instructions.

Structural welding at home: engineers, permits and CWB certification

Steel posts and beams that carry a floor, wall or roof are sized by an engineer, who also specifies the connections: the type and size of welds, bolts and bearing plates. Your municipality decides whether the work needs a building permit, and in Quebec the contractor doing the construction work needs a licence from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec that covers it. The welder's role is to build exactly what the drawings show, never to size steel by eye.

For structural and code-governed work, look for a company certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau under CSA W47.1, the standard for companies that fusion weld steel. Certification requires qualified welding supervisors, welding procedures reviewed and approved by the bureau, and welders tested for the processes and positions they use in production, and the bureau publishes a directory of certified companies. An engineer's drawings may call for a certified fabricator outright.

Hot-work fire safety when welding at a house: sparks, hidden combustibles and fire watch

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) calls welding, cutting and soldering near flammable materials hot work, and its precautions translate directly to a house. Sparks and spatter land in dry leaves, siding, insulation or the gaps of a wood floor, and heat carried along a steel post or beam can ignite material hidden in a wall. CCOHS says a trained fire watcher should stay in the work area for at least 60 minutes after the work stops, and that some jobs need monitoring for up to 3 or more hours.

  • Combustibles are moved away from the work, or covered with fire-resistant blankets or shields when they can't be moved.
  • Cracks in floors, along baseboards and walls and under doors are blocked with fire-resistant material so sparks can't slip through.
  • Walls, partitions and ceilings near the work are checked for combustible materials inside them before welding starts.
  • A suitable fire extinguisher, such as an ABC unit, is kept within easy reach throughout the job.

Welding galvanized, painted and coated steel: zinc fumes and old paint

Much of the steel around a house is coated, and that matters once it's welded. CCOHS notes that the zinc on galvanized steel vaporizes into zinc oxide fume, which can cause metal fume fever, and lists paints, solvents, lead oxide primers, oils and rust inhibitors among the coatings that release harmful vapours or fumes. Its guidance is to remove coatings from the weld area without grinding them, since the dust may be toxic, and to capture fumes with local exhaust ventilation close to the source.

  • Old railings and gates may carry lead-based paint, so the area should be stripped properly rather than burned through.
  • Keep nearby windows closed and people and pets away while work happens against the house.
  • Indoor welding, such as steel work in a basement, needs a plan for ventilation and fumes before the work begins.
  • The repaired area needs a zinc-rich or matching touch-up before it faces road salt and another winter.

Welding: frequently asked questions

Can a welder come to my house to repair a railing or gate?

Yes. Mobile welders bring their own equipment and usually their own power, and repair most fixed railings, gates and posts where they stand. Pieces that come off easily, or that need aluminum or fine TIG work, are often better done in a shop.

Can a broken cast iron railing be welded?

Sometimes, but cast iron cracks easily when heated unevenly, so it takes a welder experienced with it, often using preheating or brazing. Badly rusted or brittle sections may be better reproduced in steel.

Is it safe to weld galvanized steel?

It can be done with precautions. CCOHS notes that the zinc coating vaporizes into zinc oxide fume, which can cause metal fume fever, so professionals remove the coating at the weld, capture the fumes and restore the zinc protection afterward.

Do I need an engineer to add a steel beam or post?

Yes. Structural steel is sized by an engineer, who specifies the connections and welds, and your municipality may require a permit. The welder or fabricator then builds to those drawings.

What does it mean when a welding company is CWB certified?

It means the Canadian Welding Bureau has certified the company under a CSA standard, which involves qualified supervisors, approved welding procedures and welders tested for the processes and positions they use. You can look a company up in the bureau's directory.

Can aluminum be welded on site?

It can, but aluminum usually calls for TIG or MIG equipment with shielding gas, which wind disrupts outdoors. Many welders prefer to repair aluminum in the shop, so ask whether the piece can be removed.
