Get business consulting leads in Australia

Business consulting requests arrive with the shape of the engagement already settled. The owner has said whether the work is strategy, operations, a business plan, a franchise, a sales process or the sale of the company itself, and whether the business is an idea, under three years old, established, or heading for succession. You read all of that before you spend anything.

What a business consulting lead shows you

Every business consulting request answers these questions before it reaches you. Follow-up questions appear only when an earlier answer calls for them.

A pre-launch founder who needs a business plan and an established company planning an exit are different engagements, and the preview separates them. Requests also carry the headcount and whether the owner wants to meet in person or by video, so you can judge travel and scope before you connect.

The guide clients get on this site

We publish a business consulting guide for clients. It is written for them, not for us, and its headings are a fair list of what someone who has read it will ask you about.

Read the business consulting guide

What the guide covers

  • What Australian business consultants actually get hired to do
  • How to scope a consulting engagement so it can be judged
  • Warning signs in a consulting proposal
  • No licence, but the Australian Consumer Law still applies
  • Consultant, contractor or employee: getting the classification right
  • Fee structures used by Australian business consultants
  • Who owns the work: IP, confidentiality and reuse

Questions it answers

  • Do business consultants need a licence in Australia?
  • What has to be in the proposal before I sign it?
  • How do I check a consultant's claims when there is no register?
  • Can a long-term consultant become my employee by accident?
  • Is a day rate or a fixed fee better?
  • What happens to the models and spreadsheets the consultant builds?

No licence, but the Australian Consumer Law still applies

From our guide for this trade, with the official sources it was checked against.

Because consulting is unlicensed, the discipline comes from general law rather than from an occupational regulator. A consultant's own claims about their track record, qualifications and likely results are representations made in trade or commerce, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission enforces the prohibitions on misleading and deceptive conduct in that setting.

Practically, that means you can and should ask for claims in writing. A consultant who says they doubled a client's margin should be willing to put that in the proposal. A consultant who will say it in a meeting but not on paper has told you something.

Professional indemnity insurance is not compulsory for consultants in the way it is for some licensed occupations. If the advice will drive a large commitment, ask whether the consultant carries it, for how much, and whether the policy responds to the kind of work in your scope.

How matching works

Requests are matched by published rules that are the same for every pro.

How we rank and match pros
  • You receive a request only for services you offer and haven’t excluded, in the areas you serve.
  • Your account must be active, with your email address and phone number verified, and you must be accepting new requests within the daily or weekly limits you set.
  • Requests reach you only with timings you accept, such as emergencies, and budgets that aren’t clearly outside the range you work in.
  • When more pros fit than a lead allows, we give more weight to an exact service match, how directly you cover the area, verification, how quickly you reply and, once you have at least three published reviews, your rating. Never to who pays more.
  • Each lead goes to a limited number of pros, and you see that number before you decide.

Invalid leads and refunds

If a lead turns out to be invalid, you can ask for a refund review from your dashboard. We look at each request and let you know the outcome. A lead may qualify when:

  • The contact details are wrong or don't work.
  • It duplicates a lead you already received.
  • It isn't a real request for work.
  • It's outside the services or areas you listed.

Verification you’ll need

Before you receive leads, you confirm your business email and phone number with one-time codes. Business registration, licence and insurance details are optional during sign-up; once our team checks them, your profile shows what was verified and when.

  • Contact details verified

You confirm your business email and phone number with one-time codes. This is required before you receive leads.

  • Business registration checked

Our team reviews the registration details you provide.

  • Licence and insurance checked

Where your trade calls for a licence or insurance, we review what you provide.

Verification shows which details were checked and when. It isn’t a guarantee of workmanship, and it can’t be bought.

Getting set up for business consulting work

  • Set the company sizes you work with in your lead preferences. Advising a sole trader and advising a two-hundred-person firm are different practices.
  • Name the engagements you take in your profile description — a single advice session, a defined project, a retainer — because the client chooses between them in the request.
  • If you work by video only, say so. Clients state a meeting preference, and matching it saves you both a conversation.
