A heated floor warms a room from the ground up, with electric heating cable or mats, or with tubing that carries warm water, laid under the floor covering. The most common project is an electric floor under bathroom tile, but heated floors also go into kitchens, entrances, basements and whole new houses, where a hydronic system can be the main source of heat.

The work crosses trades. A flooring or tile installer lays an electric mat or cable, a licensed electrician connects it to a circuit and thermostat, and a heating contractor designs and connects a hydronic system. The floor covering, the insulation under the heating element and the controls decide whether the floor is pleasant to live with and reasonable to run.

Electric vs hydronic heated floors: heating mats, loose cable and hot-water tubing

  • Electric heating mats: cable attached to a mesh at fixed spacing and unrolled in strips; quick to lay in a simple room, less adaptable to irregular shapes.
  • Loose electric cable: laid by hand, often pressed into a membrane or fastening strips, so the spacing can be adjusted and the heat can follow angled walls, curved showers and tight corners.
  • Hydronic tubing: flexible tubing carrying warm water from a boiler or a suitable water heater, embedded in a slab or thin topping, or fastened under the subfloor.
  • Electric systems suit single rooms and renovations, since they add little height and need only a circuit and a thermostat.
  • Hydronic systems suit large areas, basements and new construction, where the extra piping, pump and controls serve a bigger floor.
  • Response time: a thin electric floor under tile warms fairly quickly, while tubing in a thick slab heats and cools slowly and works best at a steady setting.

Heated floors in bathrooms, basements and kitchens: comfort heat or main heat

Bathrooms are the classic choice: tile is cold underfoot, the room is small and the floor is often being redone anyway. Kitchens, entrances and mudrooms benefit too, and a warm floor helps dry melted snow and wet boots. Basements gain the most comfort, because the slab keeps the floor cool much of the year, and they are also where insulation under the heat matters most.

Decide early whether the floor is for comfort or for heat. Most electric bathroom floors are comfort heat: they take the chill off the tile while the home's regular system heats the room. Making the floor a room's main heat, or heating a whole basement with it, is a design question, since the floor must deliver as much heat as the room loses; a heating contractor should calculate it. Heated floors are often called efficient because warm feet make a room feel comfortable at a lower air temperature, but real savings depend on the house, the energy source and how the floor is used.

Best flooring over a heated floor: tile, engineered wood and what to check

  • Tile and stone: the easiest match, since they conduct heat well and aren't harmed by it; the cable or tubing sits in the mortar or self-levelling layer beneath them.
  • Engineered wood: often approved over radiant heat thanks to its stable core, provided the product's instructions allow it and its surface temperature limit and start-up procedure are followed.
  • Solid hardwood: riskier, because heat dries the boards from below and can open gaps or cup them; consider it only where the maker explicitly approves it.
  • Vinyl and laminate: some products are rated for heated floors and others aren't; check the rating, the temperature limit and whether electric cable may sit directly beneath that type of floor.
  • Carpet: thick carpet and pad hold the heat in the floor, so carpet over radiant heat needs a thin, dense pad and approval from both the carpet and heating makers.

How a heated floor is installed: layout, insulation over concrete and hydronic connections

Planning comes first: the installer draws the heated area around fixtures and cabinets, orders mats or cable to fit it and decides where the thermostat and its floor sensor go. Makers forbid cutting the heating cable itself, so the layout has to be accurate before anything is ordered.

Over a concrete slab, especially in a basement, much of the warmth can flow down into the cold concrete instead of up into the room. System makers commonly offer or call for an insulating underlayment beneath the heating element on slabs, and a new hydronic slab is usually poured over rigid insulation. Without it, the floor is slower to warm and costlier to run.

A hydronic floor is part of the heating system. Tubing is laid in loops that return to a manifold and pressure-tested before it's covered, then connected to a boiler or, in some homes, a water heater approved for space heating, usually through a mixing valve that sends the floor cooler water than radiators get. Electrical permits for heated floors: licensed electricians, ESA and CMEQ

An electric heated floor is part of the home's wiring: it needs a suitable circuit, the protection the electrical code requires, a thermostat and a proper connection at the panel. The flooring or tile installer can lay the mat or cable, but connecting it is work for a licensed electrician, never a homeowner project.

In Ontario, the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) says a notification of work should be filed before electrical work starts; a Licensed Electrical Contractor you hire files it and requests the inspection, and ESA issues a Certificate of Acceptance once the work passes, which is worth keeping with your house records. In Quebec, the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ) states that no one may carry out electrical work of any kind for others unless they are an electrical contractor, so hire a master electrician and check the licence. Other provinces have their own permit systems, which the electrician will follow.

Heated floor thermostats and controls: floor sensors, schedules and everyday care

An electric heated floor runs on its own thermostat, mounted on a nearby wall, which reads a sensor set in the floor between cable runs. Reading the floor rather than the air lets it hold a steady surface temperature and respect the flooring maker's limit, which matters for wood and vinyl. Programmable and connected models warm the floor before you usually get up or come home, then turn it down, so it isn't heating an empty bathroom all day.

Hydronic floors are controlled by zone: each thermostat opens a valve or starts a pump for its loops, while a mixing valve or the boiler's controls keep the water at the lower temperature floors need. A slab responds slowly, so steady settings suit it better than deep daily setbacks. Electric floors need little care beyond pressing the thermostat's ground-fault test button as its manual recommends; hydronic systems need the boiler and pump servicing the heating contractor sets out.

Heated floor problems: no heat, cold patches and hydronic zones that won't warm up

  • No heat on an electric floor: the thermostat's ground-fault protection or the breaker may have cut the power; if it trips again after a reset, stop and call an electrician.
  • Damaged cable: a nick from a trowel or a later renovation can stop the whole floor; specialists can locate the break, and a repair usually means lifting a tile or two and splicing with the maker's repair kit.
  • Cold patches: gaps in coverage, cable spaced too widely or heat escaping into an uninsulated slab; a thermal camera shows where the warmth stops.
  • A floor that only feels lukewarm: the thermostat may be capping the temperature to protect the covering, the sensor may be badly placed, or the system was sized for comfort rather than heat.
  • Hydronic zone that won't warm: air in the loop, a stuck zone valve, a failed circulator or a mixing valve set too low; these call for a heating contractor.

Can a heated floor be added without replacing the floor covering?

Not with an electric mat or cable, which sits just under the covering. Hydronic tubing or some electric systems can sometimes be fastened under the subfloor from an unfinished ceiling below, but the heat then has to pass through the subfloor and the covering; a heating contractor can say whether that suits your floor.

Can a heated floor heat a whole basement?

Sometimes, especially a hydronic floor designed for it with insulation under the slab. An electric floor sized for comfort usually can't keep up alone in cold weather. The answer comes from a heat-loss calculation for the space, not from the product's label.

Are heated floors expensive to run?

It depends on the heated area, your settings, the insulation beneath and your energy rates. A small bathroom floor on a programmable thermostat that runs only when the room is used costs far less than one left on all day.

Can a heated floor go in a shower?

Some electric systems are approved for shower floors and benches when installed with the waterproofing and protection their maker specifies; others are not. Ask the installer to confirm the product is rated for that use before tiling begins.
