How to measure for the tile calculator

  1. Floors: measure the length and width of each section, wall to wall.
  2. Walls and backsplashes: enter the width of each wall as the length and the height to be tiled as the width.
  3. For an exact tile count, measure an actual tile rather than relying on the nominal size on the box.
  4. Read the coverage per box on the label, in square feet or square metres.

Assumptions behind the tile calculator

Every default below appears in the calculator and can be changed.

  • Area = length × width for each section, added together.
  • Default waste: 10%. It’s our starting point, not a standard: diagonal and herringbone layouts produce more offcuts, so raise it for those, and ask your installer for their figure.
  • Tile count = area with waste ÷ area of one tile, rounded up. Grout joints are ignored, which rounds slightly in your favour.
  • Boxes are rounded up to whole boxes. Mortar, grout, membranes and trim pieces are not included.

Tile calculator: tips before you buy

  • Buy all the tile at once and check that the boxes show the same lot or shade code.
  • Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs; a discontinued tile can be hard to match.
  • Dry-lay a few rows before you start to plan the cuts at the edges.
  • Check the manufacturer’s flatness requirements before choosing a large tile.

Tile calculator: frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

It depends on the tile size. With 12 × 24 in tiles (2 sq ft each) and 10% waste, 110 sq ft ÷ 2 = 55 tiles. Enter your tile size for your own count.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Enough for cuts, breakage and future repairs. The calculator starts at 10% and lets you change it; raise it for diagonal or herringbone layouts and ask your installer for their figure.

Can I use it for a backsplash or shower walls?

Yes. Enter each wall as an area: its width and the height to be tiled. The waste allowance covers small cut-outs such as outlets.
