Concrete contractors build and repair the hard surfaces and structural pieces around a home: slabs for garages, sheds and basements, footings under decks and additions, walkways, patios, steps and driveways. Many also fix what's already there, from sunken slabs and crumbling steps to cracks and flaking surfaces. The work is heavy and tightly timed: once the truck arrives, the crew has a limited window to place, level and finish the concrete before it sets.

Outdoor concrete in Canada faces some of the harshest conditions it can meet. Water soaks into the surface, freezes and thaws over and over through the winter, and de-icing salts speed up the damage. How long a slab lasts depends less on the day of the pour than on decisions made beforehand: the base, a mix ordered for outdoor exposure, reinforcement, joints and curing.

What concrete contractors build: slabs, footings, walkways, patios, steps and repairs

  • Slabs: garage floors, shed or hot tub pads and basement floors, each with a base, thickness and finish suited to the load it carries.
  • Footings and piers: the concrete that spreads the weight of a deck, porch, addition or garage into the soil, set deep enough to resist frost heave as the building code and plans require.
  • Walkways and patios: flatwork where slope, texture and joint layout matter as much as strength, since water and ice sit on them all winter.
  • Steps and landings: cast in place or precast, they carry people through snow and ice, so even risers and a slip-resistant finish matter.
  • Driveways: larger slabs built for vehicles and plows, usually reaching the street through a curb cut.
  • Repairs: patching flaking surfaces, resurfacing, sealing cracks, lifting sunken slabs or rebuilding crumbling steps, depending on how deep the damage goes.

The concrete process step by step: locates, excavation, base, forms, reinforcement, pour and curing

Buried lines are marked before anyone digs. In Quebec, the Régie du bâtiment du Québec asks contractors to request a free locate from Info-Excavation at least 4 business days before work starts; in Ontario, a locate through Ontario One Call is free and legally required at least 5 business days ahead. Private lines, such as power to a garage or gas to a barbecue, are located separately. Then the work follows this order:

  • Excavation: topsoil, roots and soft soil come out down to firm ground, since organic material rots and settles under a slab.
  • Base: crushed stone is spread in layers, compacted and shaped so the finished surface drains away from the house.
  • Forms: wood or metal forms set the edges, height and slope, the moment to confirm the shape, step heights and where water will run.
  • Reinforcement: steel bars or welded wire mesh set on supports so they end up inside the slab, not on the ground, or fibres mixed into the concrete, depending on the design.
  • Pour: concrete ordered for the job is placed, spread and levelled quickly, with enough hands that no section sets before it's finished.
  • Finishing: the surface is floated, then broomed for grip outdoors or troweled smooth indoors; adding water to ease finishing weakens the top layer.
  • Curing: the new concrete is kept moist and protected from sun, wind and frost so it gains strength evenly, and the contractor says when it can take foot traffic and when it can take a car.

Concrete and Canadian winters: freeze-thaw, de-icing salts and air-entrained concrete

Outdoor concrete fails from the top down more often than it breaks. Water absorbed by the surface freezes, expands and pops off thin flakes, known as scaling, and de-icing salts make it worse by keeping the surface wet and adding freeze-thaw cycles. Flaking steps and pitted walkways are the usual result, especially where the surface was finished too wet or poorly cured.

The main defence is ordered at the plant. Air-entrained concrete holds countless tiny, evenly spread air bubbles, created with an admixture, that give freezing water room to expand without cracking the paste. For exterior flatwork and steps, ask the contractor to confirm that the mix is specified for freeze-thaw and salt exposure rather than general use, and keep de-icing salt off new concrete, using sand for traction instead.

Cold also affects the pour itself. Fresh concrete must not freeze before it has gained enough strength, so late-fall work calls for heated materials, insulated blankets or enclosures and close attention to the forecast, and concrete is never placed on frozen ground, snow or ice.

Why concrete cracks, and how control joints and isolation joints help

Concrete shrinks as it dries and moves with temperature, and because it's weak in tension, it cracks. Control joints decide where: grooves tooled into fresh concrete or saw-cut soon after it hardens create a weak line, so the crack forms neatly at the bottom of the groove instead of wandering across the slab. They need enough depth, good timing and a layout in roughly square panels, with extra joints at inside corners and around drains. Isolation joints, a flexible strip where a slab meets a foundation, steps or another slab, let each piece move on its own.

A hairline crack inside a control joint is the joint doing its job. Cracks that cross panels, widen each season or leave one side higher than the other point to a weak base, missing joints, roots or frost heave, and are worth showing to a contractor before they become a trip hazard.

Permits for concrete work: footings, structural slabs and driveway curb cuts

Structural concrete, such as footings for an addition, deck or garage, a foundation wall or a garage slab, usually needs a building permit, and the municipality may ask for drawings and inspect footings before the pour. Replacing a walkway or patio at grade often doesn't, but zoning can still limit how much of a front yard is paved, how close a slab comes to lot lines and where runoff goes. Check before the forms go in, and settle who applies for the permit.

Widening a driveway or adding one where the curb is continuous involves the city, since the curb and sidewalk are public property. In Montreal, for example, a borough permit is required before a curb cut is created, removed or modified, and the city does the sidewalk work itself at the owner's expense. Other municipalities set their own rules, so that approval comes before the driveway is poured.

Concrete repair or replacement: patching, resurfacing, slab lifting or tearing out

Surface damage can often be repaired. Light scaling or spalling can be patched or covered with a bonded resurfacing layer once loose material is removed, though overlays fail on slabs that still move or stay saturated. Cracks can be cleaned and sealed to keep water out, and a slab that has sunk in one piece can sometimes be raised by injecting grout or foam beneath it.

Replacement is the better choice when a slab is broken into many pieces, heaved and settled in different directions or crumbling through its depth, or when steps have pulled away from the house. Patching a slab whose base is failing only buys time. The cause, usually drainage or poor compaction, is corrected before new concrete goes in.

Is concrete the same as cement?

No. Cement is the powder that, mixed with water, binds sand and stone into concrete. People often say cement sidewalk, but what gets poured is concrete.

Can concrete be poured in winter?

Yes, with precautions: heated materials, insulated blankets or enclosures, and never on frozen ground. Many homeowners wait for spring for outdoor flatwork, while footings for a project already under way are often poured in the cold with the right protection.

Why are my concrete steps crumbling?

Steps take more water, salt and freeze-thaw than almost any other concrete around a house, with edges exposed on several sides. Crumbling usually traces back to a mix not suited to that exposure, poor curing or years of salt. Small spalls can be patched, but steps crumbling deep or pulling away from the house are usually replaced.

Do I need a permit for a concrete patio?

Often not for a patio at grade, but some municipalities limit paved area, set distances from lot lines or regulate drainage, and a raised patio or one on footings usually needs a permit. Call your municipality with a sketch before booking the work.
