Get recruitment leads in the UK

Hiring requests are specific in the way a recruiter needs them to be. The employer says whether the roles are permanent, temporary or contract, executive or senior leadership, or a volume of hires at once — and how many people that means, from a single role to more than twenty.

What a recruitment lead shows you

Every recruitment request answers these questions before it reaches you. Follow-up questions appear only when an earlier answer calls for them.

Level is asked separately: entry, experienced, manager or executive. A single executive search and twenty entry-level hires are different businesses with different fee structures, and the preview tells them apart before you spend anything. Company headcount comes with it, so you can see who you would be working for.

The guide clients get on this site

We publish a recruitment guide for clients. It is written for them, not for us, and its headings are a fair list of what someone who has read it will ask you about.

Read the recruitment guide

What the guide covers

  • Contingency, retained and embedded permanent recruitment
  • The Conduct Regulations 2003 and the Fair Work Agency
  • Candidates are never charged to find work
  • Fee models, rebate periods and what to negotiate
  • How a permanent assignment should actually run
  • Recruiter, staffing agency or executive search firm
  • Who carries the right to work duty in a recruitment chain

Questions it answers

  • Can a recruitment agency charge me, as a candidate, to find me a job?
  • What is the difference between an employment agency and an employment business?
  • Who regulates recruitment agencies in the UK now?
  • What should a rebate clause say?
  • Is contingency or retained recruitment better?
  • Do I still have to do a right to work check on an agency-introduced hire?

Who carries the right to work duty in a recruitment chain

From our guide for this trade, with the official sources it was checked against.

The duty follows the employment relationship rather than the introduction. On a permanent placement you are the employer, and GOV.UK puts the obligation on you: check that a job applicant is allowed to work for you in the UK before you employ them.

Where the same firm is instead supplying its own temporary workers, the position shifts with the status, because those workers are employed by the agency and not by you. That is one more reason to know which of the two services you are buying for a given role, and to have it stated in the terms rather than assumed from the invoice.

A recruiter will usually have seen documents along the way and may offer to keep copies. Take them if offered, then carry out and evidence your own check before the first day of employment anyway. GOV.UK says an employer will not have to pay the civil penalty if it can show it made the correct checks, and that evidence has to be yours to produce.

How matching works

Requests are matched by published rules that are the same for every pro.

How we rank and match pros
  • You receive a request only for services you offer and haven’t excluded, in the areas you serve.
  • Your account must be active, with your email address and phone number verified, and you must be accepting new requests within the daily or weekly limits you set.
  • Requests reach you only with timings you accept, such as emergencies, and budgets that aren’t clearly outside the range you work in.
  • When more pros fit than a lead allows, we give more weight to an exact service match, how directly you cover the area, verification, how quickly you reply and, once you have at least three published reviews, your rating. Never to who pays more.
  • Each lead goes to a limited number of pros, and you see that number before you decide.

Invalid leads and refunds

If a lead turns out to be invalid, you can ask for a refund review from your dashboard. We look at each request and let you know the outcome. A lead may qualify when:

  • The contact details are wrong or don't work.
  • It duplicates a lead you already received.
  • It isn't a real request for work.
  • It's outside the services or areas you listed.

Getting set up for recruitment work

  • Set the hiring types you take. Contingency permanent placement, temporary staffing and retained executive search are rarely the same desk.
  • Say which sectors and functions you recruit in. Employers judge a recruiter on whether they know the roles before anything else.
  • Licensing applies to recruiters and temporary help agencies in some places. Add your licence details during sign-up so our team can check them.
