• Alabama

  Electrical contractors and journeyman electricians are licensed by their own state board, separate from the general contractor and home builder boards. Search the board's list of licensed electrical contractors and journeymen before the work starts, and use the same site to complain if it goes wrong.

• Alaska

  A state-issued certificate of fitness is required to perform construction work subject to the National Electrical Code in all parts of Alaska — there is no part of the state where that requirement lapses. Ask to see the certificate, and make sure the installation is presented for state inspection.

• Arkansas

  Electricians hold one of six state licence classes, and a residential job may be done by someone holding a residential master or residential journeyman licence rather than the unrestricted one. Apprentices are registered rather than licensed, so ask who on the crew holds which.

• Colorado

  Electricians are licensed by the state, not by your city. The Division says plainly that it is a violation of state law for anyone other than the homeowner who is not a registered electrical contractor to install an electrical project on your property. If you hire an electrical contractor, pulling the permit is their job, not yours.

• Connecticut

  Electricians must be licensed by the Department of Consumer Protection to perform electrical work, and journeymen and apprentices cannot work directly for you unless they are employed by, or employ, a licensed contractor of record. Registration as a home improvement contractor does not cover electrical work.

• Delaware

  Delaware law says no person shall provide electrical services, or hold themselves out as qualified to act as a licensed electrician, without a licence from the Board of Electrical Examiners. Licences run from apprentice through journeyperson to master and limited electrician, so ask which grade is actually doing the work.

• District of Columbia

  Electrical licences in the District run from apprentice through journeyman and master to electrician contractor, with separate low voltage and maintenance and repair contractor categories. Only a licensed DC contractor in that trade may apply for the electrical permit, so an unlicensed electrician cannot legally get your job permitted.

• Hawaii

  A licensed electrical contractor is not the same as a licensed electrician, and Hawaii requires both. The Department states that electrical contractors must employ licensed electricians to perform the actual electrical work, so ask who will be on site, not only whose name is on the contract.

• Idaho

  No one may act as an electrical contractor, or as a residential, journeyman or master electrician, without a licence from the Division. Electrical licensing is within the exclusive jurisdiction of the state: no city or county can require its own extra licence, registration or fee, though it may impose stricter public safety rules.

• Illinois

  Electrical licensing in Illinois is handled locally. In Naperville, for example, a permit is required before any electrical work begins and electricians working in the city must be registered as an electrical contractor with the City.

• Indiana

  There is no electrical contractor licence on the state agency's list of professions either. Electrical licensing in Indiana is local: Evansville, for example, runs contractor licensing through its Building Commission. Ask your building department which licence or registration it requires before anyone opens a panel.

• Iowa

  Electricians hold a state licence and the state runs its own online permitting and inspection system for electrical work. Ask which class the electrician holds, because the state issues journeyman, master, residential and special electrician credentials and they do not cover the same work.

• Kansas

  Electrical work is licensed city by city, or in Johnson County through the county programme's Class DE licence. Topeka publishes its own current lists of licensed electrical, plumbing, mechanical, general, excavation and specialty contractors, which is the quickest way to check someone working there.

• Kentucky

  The Electrical Division licenses electricians and electrical contractors, certifies electrical inspectors and runs education in the administration and enforcement of electrical codes and standards. It also inspects state-owned and state-leased buildings, so a state electrical inspection is not the same thing as your local one.

• Louisiana

  Some trade permits are restricted to contractors the city itself licenses. In New Orleans only an electrical contractor holding a Class A licence from the city can apply for an electrical permit, mechanical permits need the appropriate city-licensed contractor, and plumbing permits go through an Orleans Parish licensed master plumber.

• Maine

  Maine law says an electrical installation may not be made unless by an electrician licensed by the Electricians' Examining Board, except as the chapter provides. Check the licence in the state's licensee search before the work starts.

• Maryland

  All electrical work in Maryland must be done by a licensed master, journeyperson or apprentice electrician, and the Board's own search will tell you whether a master electrician's licence is active. Unlicensed electrical work is illegal in Maryland.

• Massachusetts

  Electricians hold state certificates issued by the examiners, in master, journeyman, systems contractor and systems technician classes. Ask which class the person doing your work holds.

• Michigan

  Electricians are registered as apprentices and licensed as journeyman or master electricians by the bureau, and firms hold electrical contractor licences; the state's exams are based on the 2023 National Electrical Code and the 2023 Michigan Part 8 electrical code rules. If your work is in the City of Detroit, the bureau says the city issues its own electrical licences and registrations, so check there rather than with the state.

• Minnesota

  Which edition of the National Electrical Code applies depends on the date the electrical permit is filed, not on when the work happens, and the changeover date is August 17, 2026. Homeowners can take out their own electrical permit in some cases, and the department publishes inspector directories so you can find the inspector covering your area.

• Missouri

  Missouri distinguishes two kinds of electrical licence in statute. A statewide licence allows the holder to practise in any jurisdiction regardless of local licensing requirements; a local licence, issued by a political subdivision, limits the holder to that subdivision or to one that requires no licence at all. Ask which one your electrician holds.

• Montana

  Electricians are licensed by the State Electrical Board and must complete continuing education to renew. Check the licence yourself in the state Licensee Lookup rather than relying on a card, because the licence, not the company name, is what the board can act on.

• Nebraska

  Electrical work is licensed and inspected by the state, not just by your city. The State Electrical Division licenses the electrician and inspects the installation against the National Electrical Code, so make sure the inspection is applied for and that it happens before the work is closed up.

• New Hampshire

  If you are paying for it, the electrical work must be done by someone licensed by the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification: the statute says no electrician installation shall be made for compensation unless made by a licensed electrician. Ask whether the person on site is a master, a journeyman or a registered apprentice, because an apprentice works under supervision.

• New Mexico

  In Albuquerque an electrical permit is required to install an appliance, device, equipment or wiring, and for any addition to, alteration of or replacement of existing appliances, devices, wiring or equipment. That is a wider net than people expect, and it is separate from the building permit for the same project.

• North Carolina

  Electrical contracting requires a licence from the electrical board: no person or business may engage, or offer to engage, in that business without one. Licences are issued in limited, intermediate and unlimited classifications, which cap the value of a project the holder may take on.

• North Dakota

  The electrical licence requirement is written broadly: it covers every person or business that undertakes or offers to undertake to plan, lay out, supervise, install, add to, alter or repair wiring, apparatus or equipment for electric light, heat or power. The Board has jurisdiction over all electrical installations, so a state inspection applies even where the city does not inspect.

• Ohio

  An electrical contractor doing commercial work in Ohio needs a state licence from the licensing board, granted after the board's examination. Building and health departments that run a registration programme have to verify that state licence before issuing a commercial permit, so the number is something the permit desk will ask for anyway.

• Oklahoma

  Electrical work runs on a three-step ladder of apprentice, journeyman and contractor. Apprentices must register annually and complete continuing education before re-registering, journeymen and contractors complete continuing education on the board's cycle, and contractors must maintain bond and insurance. Ask which of the three the person on your roof or in your panel actually holds.

• Oregon

  Electrical work needs two licences, not one: the Division says electrical contractors are required to have a CCB licence and the appropriate Building Codes Division electrical contractor's licence. Ask for both numbers, and check each in its own search before the work begins.

• Pennsylvania

  In Philadelphia an electrical contractor needs a city electrical contractor licence, and fire suppression and complete demolition work need city licences too. Outside Philadelphia there is no statewide electrical licence, so ask your municipality what it requires before the work starts.

• Rhode Island

  Electrical work in Rhode Island requires a licence and certificate from the state board of examiners of electricians — the law reaches anyone who works at, solicits, advertises or bids for the business of installing, maintaining, servicing or testing wiring and apparatus. Contractor registration alone does not allow someone to do your wiring.

• South Carolina

  Residential electrician is one of the specialty trades the Residential Builders Commission licenses in its own right, alongside the registered trades such as roofing, masonry and carpentry. Ask which classification the electrician holds, and check it on the Commission's side of the agency rather than the commercial board's.

• South Dakota

  The Electrical Commission licenses every electrician in the state and inspects the wiring itself, so an electrical job has two checks: the licence and the inspection. The Commission also investigates complaints about electrical wiring, which is the route to take if work looks wrong after the fact.

• Tennessee

  The Limited Licensed Electrician covers work under a per-project value the Board sets, and is only required of electricians working in a municipality that uses the Division of Fire Prevention for permits or inspections. The Board tells applicants to check with the local government first, because many cities have their own licensing requirement for permits and inspections.

• Texas

  Anyone who performs, or offers to perform, non-exempt electrical work in Texas must be licensed and must perform that work through a licensed electrical contractor.

• Utah

  An electrical contractor licence must have a master electrician as its qualifier, so a firm offering electrical work should be able to name that person. Electrician candidates sitting the licensing exam must send a verification of experience form to the exam provider with their registration.

• Vermont

  Electrical work is licensed separately and by a different part of state government: the Electricians' Licensing Board sits with the Division of Fire Safety, not the Secretary of State. The law reaches anyone who installs, replaces or repairs an electrical installation without the right licence, and Type-S licences are limited to named specialties such as automatic heating, refrigeration and air conditioning, or well pumps.

• Washington

  Electrical work needs both a licensed business and a certified individual: it is unlawful to carry on the business of installing or maintaining electrical wiring or equipment without an electrical contractor licence, and no one may work in the electrical construction trade without a certificate of competency. An electrical permit is required for most electrical work, whether you or your contractor does it.

• West Virginia

  Electricians are not licensed by the Division of Labor but by the State Fire Marshal, which runs the statewide licence programs for electricians and electrical inspectors. That means an electrical licence and a contractor licence are checked in two different places; ask for both.

• Wisconsin

  An electrical contractor must hold a department licence, must use appropriately licensed or registered individuals for the work, and may not start installing wiring on a job that needs a uniform building permit until that permit has been issued. The licence number is required on bids and contracts, so it should already be on the paperwork you are given.

• Wyoming

  Electricians hold a state licence, issued by the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety on the apprentice, journeyman and master pattern. An electrical wiring permit must be obtained before starting new construction or remodelling of any building, mobile home or premises where the work will need a public utility to connect, or disconnect and restore, electrical power.
