Most of these professions are licensed state by state rather than nationally, so the same firm can be licensed in one state and not in another. Attorneys are admitted jurisdiction by jurisdiction, and each jurisdiction sets its own admission policies. CPAs are licensed by a state board of accountancy. Engineers, surveyors and architects are licensed by state boards. Insurance producers are licensed by state insurance regulators. Mortgage companies and loan originators are licensed through NMLS, whose free NMLS Consumer Access lookup confirms whether a company or professional is authorized to do business in your state. Before you hire, ask for the license number and the state that issued it, and check it with that regulator.
