Translation is written; interpreting is spoken, in person or by phone or video. Certified translations are often required for immigration filings, courts and official records. There is no single national translator’s licence in the United States, so the organisation asking for the document decides which certification or signed statement it will accept: ask them first, then brief the translator.

Ask which language pairs a translator works in and in which direction, how they check quality and how long the work will take. For interpreting, describe the setting, such as a legal appointment, a medical appointment, a business meeting or a conference, because each calls for different experience and vocabulary.
