• General contracting and renovation

• Plumbing

  Plumbing has been certified separately since January 1, 2009: no plumber may perform or offer to perform plumbing work in West Virginia without a plumber certification from the Division of Labor. Certification comes in three levels — master plumber, journeyman plumber and plumber in training — and a plumber in training is not competent to work alone.

• Electrical work

  Electricians are not licensed by the Division of Labor but by the State Fire Marshal, which runs the statewide licence programs for electricians and electrical inspectors. That means an electrical licence and a contractor licence are checked in two different places; ask for both.

  HVAC work carries its own credential. The Division of Labor issues HVAC technician certifications alongside contractor licences and plumber certifications, and its field inspectors run both routine and complaint-driven inspections, so a complaint about uncertified work has somewhere to go.

• Consumer protection
