Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms give a household the warning it needs to get out, often before anyone smells smoke or feels unwell. Smoke alarms react to a fire; CO alarms detect the colourless, odourless gas that fuel-burning furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, stoves and running cars can produce. In Ontario and in many Quebec municipalities, having working alarms in the right places is also a legal obligation for owners and landlords.

Installation ranges from placing battery alarms where they belong to replacing a home's hardwired, interconnected alarms, or adding new ones on a circuit so that when one sounds, they all do. Battery and plug-in units need no wiring, but alarms connected to the home's electrical system are work for a licensed electrician.

Types of smoke and CO alarms: battery, hardwired, interconnected and combination units

  • Replaceable-battery alarms: the most common type, with a battery changed on the manufacturer's schedule or when the alarm chirps.
  • Sealed long-life alarms: the Quebec government recommends models with lithium batteries that last 10 years; the whole unit is replaced at the end of its life.
  • Hardwired alarms: connected to the 120-volt household supply, and the Quebec government says they should also contain a backup battery for power outages.
  • Interconnected alarms: linked so that when one detects smoke, all of them sound, giving someone in a bedroom far from the fire the same warning.
  • Combination smoke and CO alarms: one device that detects both, which Ontario notes is common on the market.
  • Plug-in CO alarms: Ontario allows CO alarms to be hardwired, battery-operated or plug-in, and Health Canada suggests models with a digital display that shows low CO levels.

Where to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: every level, bedrooms and the attached garage

Health Canada recommends a smoke alarm in each bedroom, in the hallway outside the bedrooms and on each level of the home, including the basement, and names the hallway outside sleeping areas as the most important place for a CO alarm. The Quebec government adds spots near the stairs, and for CO alarms, near the door to an attached garage and in the room above it.

  • Smoke alarms go on the ceiling at least 10 centimetres (4 inches) from the wall, or on the wall 10 to 30 centimetres below the ceiling, as the Quebec government advises.
  • A CO alarm belongs inside any bedroom where someone sleeps with the door closed.
  • Keep CO alarms out of the garage itself, the kitchen and the bathroom, and away from fuel-burning appliances and ventilation openings.
  • In an existing home, the electrician checks whether hardwired alarms can be added in new locations and linked to the ones already there.

Ontario Fire Code and Quebec rules for smoke and CO alarms in existing homes

By law, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas, and the homeowner is responsible for installing and maintaining them. The Fire Code also requires CO alarms in homes with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage: adjacent to each sleeping area and, since January 1, 2026, on every storey, including storeys without sleeping areas. Failing to meet the smoke alarm requirements can bring a ticket or a fine.

In Quebec, smoke alarm rules for houses come largely from municipalities, and the Quebec government asks residents to check theirs. In Montreal, the fire safety by-law (RCG 12-003) requires owners to provide and install smoke alarms: at least one per floor, including the basement, plus one in each bedroom and between the bedrooms and the rest of the floor in buildings built after June 2015. Buildings from before 1985 without electric alarms need models with a non-removable 10-year lithium battery.

For residential buildings covered by Quebec's Safety Code, such as multi-unit and co-owned buildings, the Régie du bâtiment du Québec says a CO alarm is required when a unit has a combustion appliance, such as a gas range or a fireplace, or direct access to an indoor parking garage.

Smoke and CO alarms in rental housing: landlord and tenant responsibilities

  • Ontario landlords must make sure their rental properties comply with the smoke alarm law, and tenants missing required alarms should contact the landlord right away.
  • Ontario landlords also install, maintain and test CO alarms in rental units annually, when the battery is replaced, after changes to the electrical circuit and when tenants change.
  • In Ontario it's illegal for tenants to remove smoke alarm batteries or tamper with the alarm, and for anyone to do so with a CO alarm.
  • In Montreal, the owner provides and installs smoke alarms, and owners and tenants share the checking; tenants test monthly and tell the owner about a missing or faulty alarm.

Smoke alarm lifespan: ten-year replacement and CO alarm expiry dates

Smoke alarms don't last forever. Health Canada says to replace any smoke alarm more than ten years old, Ontario says to replace them every 10 years according to the manufacturer's instructions, and in Quebec the RBQ and the Quebec government count the 10 years from the manufacturing date on the casing.

CO alarms expire too. Health Canada advises checking the expiry date and replacing the alarm as the manufacturer recommends; many units announce the end of their life with a distinct signal described in the manual. When hardwired alarms reach the end of their life, replacing them together keeps an interconnected system matched.

Testing smoke and CO alarms and changing their batteries

  • Test every smoke alarm once a month with its test button, as Health Canada, Ontario and the Quebec government all recommend.
  • Ontario's guidance also calls for testing CO alarms every month, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ontario advises a new battery at least once a year, or as the manufacturer recommends, and the Quebec government says to replace it when the alarm gives an intermittent beep.
  • Hardwired alarms have a backup battery that needs the same care, and sealed long-life units need no battery changes but still need monthly tests.
  • Clean alarms as the manufacturer directs; the Quebec government suggests doing it once a year.
  • Never disconnect a hardwired alarm or pull a battery to stop nuisance alarms; have an alarm that keeps going off near the kitchen moved or replaced instead.

Replacing hardwired smoke alarms and adding interconnected alarms: when you need an electrician

New homes are built to the building code in force and are typically fitted with smoke alarms wired to the electrical system and linked so they sound together. Ontario's guidance on Building Code requirements for tiny homes, for example, says smoke alarms must meet the CAN/ULC-S531 standard, flash a light when activated and be connected to an electrical circuit. When a hardwired alarm wears out, replace it with a hardwired model rather than a battery-only unit, so the home keeps its wiring and interconnection.

Connectors and mounting plates vary between models, so a replacement may need a new wiring connector, and older systems sometimes need new cable to link additional alarms. Adding hardwired alarms, linking them or putting them on a circuit is electrical work: in Ontario, a Licensed Electrical Contractor notifies ESA; in Quebec, a contractor licensed through the CMEQ does it. The Quebec government likewise notes that permanently installed electric CO alarms are installed by an electrician.
