  • Headaches, tiredness, eye or throat irritation, or allergy and asthma flare-ups that improve when you spend a few days away from home.
  • Odours that linger after a renovation, especially new flooring, cabinetry, spray-applied products or a newly finished basement.

Titles like air quality specialist can describe very different backgrounds, so look past the name. Health Canada's guidance lists industrial or occupational hygienists, environmental public health professionals, environmental consultants and HVAC engineers among the people who carry out this work. Whoever you hire should start by listening to the complaint.

  • Ask what they plan to measure and why, and be wary of a one-size package that tests for everything or of an assessor who proposes only mould air sampling.
  • Prefer someone independent of remediation, duct cleaning or equipment sales, so the findings don't steer you toward their own services.

Is indoor air quality testing worth it if nobody has symptoms?

Usually not as a first step. A hygrometer, a working carbon monoxide alarm, regular use of your fans and a long-term radon test cover the most common concerns. Book a professional when you notice a persistent odour, condensation or symptoms that seem tied to the house, or after major renovations.

Can an air quality test tell me whether I have mould?

Not reliably. Health Canada does not recommend air testing for mould and says to start with a visual inspection and look for signs of moisture. An assessor with moisture meters and thermal imaging is better placed to find hidden mould and the water behind it.

What carbon dioxide level is too high in a house?

Health Canada's residential guideline sets a long-term exposure limit of 1,000 ppm, averaged over 24 hours. Readings that stay high, particularly in bedrooms overnight, generally point to a home that needs more ventilation.

Does an indoor air quality test include radon?

Look at what changed: new furniture, paint, a renovation, a cleaning product or a hobby. Increase ventilation, remove or seal the likely source and see whether the reading drops.
