Indoor air quality testing looks at what is actually in the air inside your home and, more importantly, where it comes from. A professional assessment usually combines a conversation about symptoms and routines, a walk-through from basement to attic, and targeted measurements of humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and fine particles. A useful result isn't a long list of readings but an explanation: what the problem is, what's causing it and what will fix it.
Canadian homes stay closed up for much of the year, and newer or recently air-sealed houses leak far less air than older ones. Pollutants from cooking, fuel-burning appliances, new furniture, renovation products and damp basements can build up when ventilation doesn't keep pace. Testing pays off when something specific prompts it: a lingering odour, condensation and musty smells, symptoms that ease when you're away, or a major renovation.

What a professional indoor air quality assessment measures in a Canadian home
Health Canada's guidance for indoor air quality professionals describes investigations built on walkthroughs, site inspections and equipment checks, with air sampling and monitoring carried out as required. In practice, the assessor asks when and where the problem shows up, looks at the ventilation, heating appliances, basement and attic, then picks the measurements that fit the complaint instead of testing for everything.
- Relative humidity and temperature: readings in several rooms, including the basement, compared with the 30% to 50% range Health Canada recommends for homes.
- Carbon dioxide: used as a stand-in for ventilation rather than as a pollutant in its own right; Health Canada's residential guideline sets a long-term exposure limit of 1,000 ppm based on a 24-hour average, so a meaningful result takes a full day of monitoring, not a quick spot check.
- Carbon monoxide: checked near furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, the attached garage and sleeping areas, since the gas has no colour or smell.
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): gases given off by paints, varnishes, glues, new furniture and cleaning products, sampled when odours or recent work point to them.
- Fine particles: measured with an optical instrument to trace cooking, candles, wood smoke, renovation dust or outdoor smoke getting into the house.
- Moisture and mould: moisture meter readings and a close visual inspection of damp areas, with surface or air samples only when they answer a specific question.

When indoor air quality testing is worth it: symptoms, renovations, new homes and odours
A test earns its place when there's a question to answer. If the house seems fine and you only want reassurance, a hygrometer, a working carbon monoxide alarm and proper use of your fans often tell you as much. A professional assessment makes sense in situations like these:
- Headaches, tiredness, eye or throat irritation, or allergy and asthma flare-ups that improve when you spend a few days away from home.
- Odours that linger after a renovation, especially new flooring, cabinetry, spray-applied products or a newly finished basement.
- A new build or a deep energy retrofit, where tighter construction leaves the ventilation equipment to do more of the work.
- A musty, chemical or combustion smell whose source you can't track down.
- Condensation on windows, frost in the attic or damp patches in the basement, all signs that moisture isn't leaving the house.
- Before a newborn, an older relative or someone with a respiratory condition moves in.
Home air quality monitors vs professional IAQ testing
Consumer monitors that display humidity, carbon dioxide, particles or VOCs make trends easy to see: carbon dioxide creeping up overnight in a closed bedroom, particles jumping when a pan starts smoking. That's valuable for spotting patterns and checking whether a change worked. Monitors are weaker at naming a specific compound, confirming a low-level problem or explaining a cause, and many VOC sensors report a combined index rather than individual chemicals.
Health Canada points out that sensor accuracy, placement, how often readings are taken and calibration all shape what carbon dioxide data can tell you. A professional brings calibrated instruments, laboratory analysis when it's needed and, above all, the inspection that ties numbers to sources. Many households use both: a monitor for everyday awareness and an assessment when readings or symptoms raise a question the monitor can't settle. Neither replaces a certified carbon monoxide alarm.
Mould and air sampling: why Health Canada puts inspection and moisture first
Air sampling for mould is one of the most requested tests and one of the least informative. Health Canada does not recommend testing the air for mould: its guide on moisture and mould says air tests don't predict health effects and often offer little information about the cause of mould damage. Its guidance for professionals adds that air sampling can produce results that are hard to interpret.
What works is a visual inspection for mould and for signs of excess moisture, such as stains or discolouration, followed by finding and fixing the water source. Where there's a strong musty odour but no visible damage, Health Canada suggests consulting a professional about hidden mould. Improving indoor air after testing: source control, ventilation and filtration
Health Canada calls removing or reducing the sources of pollutants the most effective way to improve indoor air, with ventilation and air cleaning in supporting roles. A good report ranks its recommendations in that order.
- Source control: keep paints and solvents out of the living space, choose low-emission products, never idle a vehicle in an attached garage, and have fuel-burning appliances inspected by a qualified professional every year, as Health Canada advises.
- Moisture control: fix leaks and drainage, vent the dryer outdoors and run a dehumidifier when relative humidity stays above 50%.
- Spot ventilation: bathroom fans and a range hood that exhausts outdoors, used during and after showers and cooking.

Who does indoor air quality testing: choosing a qualified assessor
Titles like air quality specialist can describe very different backgrounds, so look past the name. Health Canada's guidance lists industrial or occupational hygienists, environmental public health professionals, environmental consultants and HVAC engineers among the people who carry out this work. Whoever you hire should start by listening to the complaint.
- Ask what they plan to measure and why, and be wary of a one-size package that tests for everything or of an assessor who proposes only mould air sampling.
- Prefer someone independent of remediation, duct cleaning or equipment sales, so the findings don't steer you toward their own services.
- Ask about credentials, such as an occupational hygiene designation or an engineering licence, and how their instruments are calibrated.
- Check that any samples go to an accredited laboratory.
- Expect a written report that explains each reading in plain language, compares it with Health Canada guidance where it exists and lists recommendations by priority.
Indoor Air Quality Testing: frequently asked questions
Is indoor air quality testing worth it if nobody has symptoms?
Usually not as a first step. A hygrometer, a working carbon monoxide alarm, regular use of your fans and a long-term radon test cover the most common concerns. Book a professional when you notice a persistent odour, condensation or symptoms that seem tied to the house, or after major renovations.
Can an air quality test tell me whether I have mould?
Not reliably. Health Canada does not recommend air testing for mould and says to start with a visual inspection and look for signs of moisture. An assessor with moisture meters and thermal imaging is better placed to find hidden mould and the water behind it.
What carbon dioxide level is too high in a house?
Health Canada's residential guideline sets a long-term exposure limit of 1,000 ppm, averaged over 24 hours. Readings that stay high, particularly in bedrooms overnight, generally point to a home that needs more ventilation.
Does an indoor air quality test include radon?

My home monitor shows high VOCs. What should I do?
Look at what changed: new furniture, paint, a renovation, a cleaning product or a hobby. Increase ventilation, remove or seal the likely source and see whether the reading drops. Consumer VOC sensors give a general indication rather than naming chemicals, so if the reading stays high or comes with symptoms, a professional can sample and identify what's there.
