Water treatment is the equipment that corrects a problem across the whole water supply rather than in one glass: an ultraviolet unit that disinfects well water, a chlorinator, an iron and manganese filter, a softener, or several of them installed in sequence on the main line. It matters most in homes on a private well, where the owner is responsible for the water, although homes on city water sometimes add a softener or a device aimed at one contaminant.

What sets treatment apart from a simple drinking water filter is that several problems often have to be solved at once, and in the right order. Sediment and iron can shield bacteria from ultraviolet light, hardness scales up the equipment downstream, and some contaminants, such as arsenic and uranium, are better handled at the kitchen tap than across the whole house.

A sound system starts with an accredited laboratory's results, uses devices certified for the contaminants found and comes with a maintenance plan the household can keep up. A water treatment specialist or plumber designs the sequence, and a follow-up test proves it works.

Start with a lab test: designing well water treatment from the results

Every treatment decision rests on a laboratory report, not on how the water looks or tastes. Health Canada advises testing well water for microbial contamination at least once every 6 months, and the chemical list should reflect local geology and land use. Ask the lab for the parameters that shape equipment choices as well as the health-related ones: iron, manganese, hardness, pH and turbidity alongside bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and uranium.

Keep that raw-water report as the baseline. Health Canada recommends testing the water entering and leaving a treatment device, so the same parameters are checked again once the system has been running.

  • Bacteria in the results point to repairing the wellhead first, then shock disinfection, with continuous disinfection if contamination keeps coming back.
  • Iron, manganese and turbidity decide what pretreatment has to sit ahead of an ultraviolet unit.

Whole-house water treatment equipment: UV, chlorination, iron filters and softeners

  • Ultraviolet disinfection: Health Canada says Class A systems certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 55 can be used to disinfect well water, while Class B units are meant only as supplemental treatment for water that is already acceptable.
  • Continuous chlorination: a metering pump feeds chlorine into the supply, which the Ontario government notes kills bacteria and viruses and can remove some forms of iron when the water is filtered afterward.
  • Iron and manganese filters: oxidizing media such as greensand, or chlorination followed by filtration, turn dissolved metals into particles that are trapped and backwashed to drain.
  • Sediment filters: cartridges or backwashing tanks that catch sand, silt and rust before they reach the rest of the equipment.
  • Softeners: ion-exchange units that remove hardness, which Ontario notes are unsuitable for removing microbes or most chemicals.
  • Point-of-use devices: a reverse osmosis unit or another certified device at the kitchen tap for contaminants that only matter in drinking and cooking water.

Order matters: how a well water treatment train is sequenced

A treatment train puts each device where it helps the next one. Health Canada advises filtering water through an NSF/ANSI Standard 53 filter before ultraviolet treatment, and the Ontario government explains why: ultraviolet light kills bacteria and viruses, but microbes embedded in dirt particles, including parasites, need filtration first. Iron and manganese also coat the quartz sleeve around the lamp and cut the light, so they have to come out upstream.

A common layout runs from the pressure tank through a sediment filter, then iron and manganese removal, then a softener if the water is hard, with the ultraviolet unit last so it disinfects water just before it reaches the taps. Chlorination changes that picture, since it needs contact time and a filter downstream. This is the real difference from a drinking water filter: one cartridge under the sink solves one problem at one tap, while a treatment train corrects several problems for every tap, shower and appliance.

Arsenic and uranium in well water: point-of-use treatment and its limits

Some naturally occurring contaminants need a different approach. For uranium, Health Canada sets a guideline of 0.020 mg/L and notes that there are currently no certified residential treatment units for removing it. Reverse osmosis at one tap and ion exchange at the point of entry are expected to be effective at bringing concentrations below the guideline, but without a certification behind those claims, periodic tests of the water going into the unit and the water coming out are the only proof that it works.

For arsenic, Health Canada's well water guidance notes that reverse osmosis removes only the pentavalent form, so the plan may call for an oxidation step or a device chosen for the form found in your water. Because both contaminants matter for what you drink and cook with rather than for washing, treating the kitchen tap is often enough and is simpler to maintain than a whole-house system.

Certified water treatment equipment and the paperwork to keep

Health Canada doesn't register or approve drinking water treatment devices, so a certification mark is your evidence that a unit does what it claims. The department strongly recommends choosing equipment certified to the applicable NSF/ANSI performance standard by a body authorized by the Standards Council of Canada.

  • Match the standard to the job: Health Canada's well water page lists Standard 55 for ultraviolet units, 44 for softeners, 42 and 53 for filters and 58 for reverse osmosis.
  • Check that the listing names the specific contaminant in your results, not just the type of device.
  • Keep the performance data sheet, the certification listing and the manual with your house records.
  • Ask for the warranty terms on the lamp, the media, the resin and the control valve in writing before installation.

UV lamp replacement, sleeve cleaning and treatment system upkeep

Treatment protects the household only while it is looked after. The Ontario government says systems must be installed, operated and maintained as directed by the manufacturer, and an ultraviolet unit gives no visible sign in the glass when it stops doing its job.

  • Replace the ultraviolet lamp on the manufacturer's schedule even if it still lights up, since its output fades before it goes dark.
  • Clean the quartz sleeve whenever the lamp is changed, and more often if the water carries hardness or iron.
  • Keep the unit powered at all times, heed its alarm or indicator, and ask the installer what to do after a power failure or a lamp change.
  • Change sediment cartridges on time, and have the backwash settings of iron filters and softeners checked as your water or usage changes.
  • Refill the solution tank and check the metering pump regularly if the house has a chlorinator.
  • Test the treated water once the system is commissioned, then on your regular well testing schedule.

Who installs a whole-house water treatment system: plumbing and electrical rules

Point-of-entry equipment is cut into the main line after the pressure tank, with bypass valves so each unit can be serviced, and softeners and backwashing filters need a drain connection that keeps wastewater from siphoning back. In Quebec, that plumbing falls under the Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence held by plumbing contractors, who obtain it through the CMMTQ, which also describes a narrow exception for owners of a single-family home they live in. Other provinces apply their own licensing rules, so ask the installer which qualification covers the work.

Ultraviolet units, chlorinators and control valves also need power. If there is no outlet nearby, adding one is electrical work: in Quebec, the CMEQ states that no one may do electrical work of any kind for others without being an electrical contractor, and elsewhere a licensed electrical contractor handles it under the provincial permit rules. On a septic system, ask where backwash and regeneration water will discharge before the equipment is chosen.

Do I need a UV system if my well tested clean?

Not necessarily. A clean result from a well-built, well-protected well may only call for regular testing. Continuous disinfection makes sense when bacteria keep returning after the wellhead is repaired and the well is shock disinfected, or when the well is vulnerable, such as a shallow dug well.

Can a water softener remove iron?

Only small amounts of dissolved iron, depending on the unit, and iron can foul the resin over time. For significant iron or manganese, a dedicated filter upstream of the softener is the usual answer. The Ontario government also notes that softeners are unsuitable for removing microbes or most chemicals.

Does UV treatment change the taste of my water?

No. Ultraviolet light inactivates microorganisms without adding anything to the water, but it also doesn't remove iron, hardness, odours or chemicals. A sulphur smell or a metallic taste needs other equipment in the treatment train.

Is there a treatment system for uranium in well water?

Health Canada says no residential units are currently certified for uranium removal, although reverse osmosis at a tap and ion exchange for the whole house are expected to be effective. Test the water entering and leaving the unit periodically to confirm it is working.

How do I know my treatment system is still working?
