Interlocking pavers are individual concrete or stone units laid tightly together over a compacted granular base, held in place by edge restraints and sand-filled joints. They are used for driveways, front walks, patios, pool decks and steps, and because each unit can be lifted and put back, an area that settles or needs work underneath can be repaired without breaking up the whole surface.

Once an interlock job is finished, most of what matters is out of sight. The excavation, the granular foundation, compaction in layers, the edge restraints and the slope that carries water away from the house decide whether a driveway stays flat winter after winter, or whether ruts and humps appear after a few freeze–thaw cycles.

Interlock vs concrete vs asphalt for driveways, patios and walkways

All three can make a good driveway, patio or walkway. They differ in how they look, how they behave when the ground moves, and what a repair looks like years later.

  • Interlocking pavers: many colours, shapes and laying patterns, joints that let the surface flex slightly with the ground, and repairs made by lifting and relaying units.
  • Poured concrete: a continuous slab, plain, stamped or coloured, but cracks are hard to hide and a damaged section usually has to be cut out and poured again.
  • Asphalt: fast to lay and easy to plow, often chosen for long driveways, but it softens in summer heat, needs resealing and patches stay visible.
  • Driveways: whichever surface you choose needs a thicker, well-compacted base under vehicles, and interlock also needs pavers rated for traffic and a pattern that resists shifting under turning tires.
  • Patios and walkways: interlock and natural stone are popular where appearance matters, while plain concrete suits simple, uniform paths.
  • Mixed designs: an asphalt or concrete driveway with an interlock border or front walk is common, with each part built on a base suited to its use.

How interlocking pavers are installed: excavation, granular base, compaction and edge restraints

An interlock contractor spends more time below grade than on the pavers themselves. The quote should describe the excavation, the type and thickness of the granular base, how it will be compacted, the edge restraint and the joint material, because none of that can be checked once the pavers are down.

The finished surface has to slope gently away from the foundation toward somewhere water can go, such as a lawn, a swale or a drain. If the lot already sends water toward the house, correct the grading before paving; the drainage page covers grading, downspouts and drains.

  • Excavation: the old surface and topsoil are removed down to firm native soil, deeper for driveways, and soft spots are dug out and replaced.
  • Geotextile: on clay or soft soil, a fabric can be laid first so the base doesn't mix with the soil beneath it.
  • Granular base: crushed stone spread and compacted in thin layers with a plate compactor, rather than dumped in one lift and compacted only on top.
  • Bedding layer: a thin, screeded layer of sand or fine stone for the pavers to sit on, never used to fill low spots in the base.
  • Laying and cutting: pavers placed in the chosen pattern, with clean cuts at the edges and no tiny slivers that can break loose.
  • Edge restraints: plastic or metal edging spiked into the base, or a concrete curb, along every edge not held by a wall or step, so the pavers can't creep outward.
  • Joints: the pavers are compacted into the bedding, then the joints are filled with sand or polymeric sand and compacted again.

Permeable pavers, driveway permits and municipal stormwater rules

Paved surfaces send rain and meltwater into sewers and toward neighbouring lots, so many municipalities limit how much of a front yard can be paved, require a permit to widen a driveway or change a curb cut, and expect runoff to stay off the neighbours' property. Some encourage features that keep water on the lot. The rules vary from city to city, so check with yours before the design is final, especially for a new or wider driveway.

Permeable pavers have wider joints filled with small, clean stone instead of sand, over a deeper open-graded stone base that holds water and lets it soak into the ground. They can reduce runoff and puddles, but they need soil that drains, a design matched to the site, and occasional cleaning so fine debris doesn't clog the joints. On heavy clay or right beside a foundation, an underdrain or another approach may be needed.

Interlock in winter: freeze–thaw, de-icing salt and snow clearing on pavers

A well-built interlock surface handles frost because the granular base drains and the joints let units shift slightly without cracking. Winter damage usually comes from water trapped in the base, from de-icing products and from snow-clearing equipment.

  • De-icers: use them sparingly, since salt residue can mark and wear the paver surface over time, and follow the paver maker's advice on products to avoid.
  • Traction: a little sand adds grip without melting anything; sweep it up in spring so it doesn't dirty the joints.
  • Plows and shovels: a plastic shovel, or a plow blade with a rubber edge set slightly high, avoids chipping pavers and catching raised edges.
  • Snowbanks: pile snow where meltwater drains away from the house, not against the edge restraints or the foundation.
  • Spring check: once the frost is out, look for heaved units, open joints and settled areas, and have them fixed before summer.

Interlock repair: resetting sunken pavers, fixing heaves and stopping weeds in the joints

Because interlock is made of separate units, most defects can be fixed without starting over. The repair has to deal with the cause, though: relaying pavers on the same wet or poorly compacted base only postpones the next dip.

  • Sunken areas: the pavers are lifted, the base is topped up and compacted, and the same units are relaid and rejointed.
  • Tire ruts in a driveway: usually a base too thin for vehicle loads, which means rebuilding that section's base rather than just relevelling it.
  • Heaving near steps or walls: often water collecting under the surface, so drainage is improved before the pavers go back.
  • Spreading edges and open joints: a missing or loose edge restraint, fixed by re-spiking it or adding a new one.
  • Weeds and moss: seeds sprout in debris that sits on top of the joint sand, so regular sweeping and refilled joints work better than pulling weeds over and over.
  • Stains and white bloom: oil, rust and efflorescence, the whitish deposit that can appear on new pavers, each call for a different cleaner, tested in a hidden spot first.

Polymeric sand, cleaning and sealing: maintaining interlocking pavers

Polymeric sand is joint sand blended with a binder that hardens after it is swept in and misted with water. Once set, it resists washout, weeds and ants better than plain sand, but it is unforgiving: it must go onto dry pavers, be swept completely off the surface before wetting, and get dry weather to cure, or it can leave a hazy film. Joints that crumble or empty out over the years can be cleaned out and refilled.

Sealing is optional. A sealer can deepen colour, make stains easier to clean and help hold joint sand in place, but the wrong product can leave the surface slippery or cloudy, and every sealer has to be renewed. Ask whether the paver manufacturer recommends sealing, let any efflorescence clear first, and choose a product made for outdoor pavers exposed to freeze–thaw.

  • Sweep regularly so grit and leaves don't settle into the joints.
  • Rinse at low pressure, since a pressure washer held close can blast the sand out of the joints.
  • Top up joints wherever the sand has dropped below the paver edges.

Interlocking: frequently asked questions

Is interlock better than asphalt for a driveway?

Neither is better everywhere. Interlock offers more design choice and cleaner repairs, since sections can be lifted and relaid, while asphalt is quicker to lay on long or plain driveways and easy to plow. Both last only as well as the base under them, so compare quotes on excavation and compaction, not just on the surface.

When can I drive on a new interlock driveway?

With plain joint sand, usually as soon as the final compaction is done. With polymeric sand, wait until the binder has cured as the product label directs, and keep water and traffic off it in the meantime. Ask your contractor for the exact instructions for the product used.

Can old interlock pavers be reused?

Often, yes. When a driveway or patio is rebuilt because of a failed base, undamaged pavers can be lifted, cleaned and relaid on the new base, with a few replacements for broken or stained units. Matching colour can be tricky if the original model has been discontinued or has faded.

Should interlocking pavers be sealed?

Not necessarily. Sealing is mostly about appearance and stain resistance, and it must be renewed over time. If you choose it, wait until efflorescence has cleared, use a product compatible with your pavers and freeze–thaw, and ask about slip resistance on steps and pool decks.

Do I need a permit to widen my driveway with interlock?

In many municipalities, yes, particularly if the curb cut changes or the front yard would end up mostly paved. Rules on driveway width, landscaped front-yard space and drainage are local, so check with your city or borough before signing a contract.
