Installing an EV charger at home usually means adding a Level 2 charging station on its own 240-volt circuit, in the garage or beside the driveway. It turns overnight parking into a full battery for most daily driving, and Hydro-Québec notes that charging at home and at work generally covers 90% of an electric vehicle's charging needs.

The charger itself is only part of the job. A licensed electrician first works out whether your panel and service can take a large load that may run for hours at a time, then plans the circuit, the location, the reach of the cable and, for a spot outdoors, equipment built for rain, snow and cold. Where capacity is tight, a load manager can sometimes avoid a service upgrade.

Because a Level 2 charger is fixed electrical equipment, the work is regulated across Canada: it is declared to the safety authority or covered by a permit, then inspected. Condo owners also need the building's approval, and in Quebec, the government's grant for home charging stations comes with its own conditions.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 home EV charging, and why DC fast chargers aren't for homes

Level 1 charging uses an ordinary household outlet and the cord often supplied with the vehicle. Hydro-Québec compares the power it draws to that of a 1,400-watt air conditioner, and it is slow: Hydro-Québec counts about 8 hours of Level 1 charging for 40 km of range. It can be enough for a plug-in hybrid or a short daily commute, but many drivers who cover more distance find it too slow.

Level 2 is the standard home installation. Natural Resources Canada describes these chargers as 240-volt appliances that a licensed electrician must install in most jurisdictions, and Hydro-Québec describes a typical home setup as a 7-kW charging station on a 240-V circuit, in the garage or outside the house, delivering 40 km of range in 1 to 3 hours of charging.

DC fast chargers belong to another category. NRCan notes that they are not suitable for home installation; you'll find them mostly at public sites and along highways, where they serve road trips rather than overnight charging.

What an electrician checks before installing a home EV charger

  • Panel and service capacity: a load calculation shows whether the house can carry a charger that may run for hours, on top of heating and other large appliances.
  • A dedicated circuit: the charger gets its own breaker and wiring sized to its rating, never a shared circuit.
  • Location and cable reach: the charger is placed so the cable reaches the vehicle's port without crossing a walkway or lying where a wheel can crush it.
  • Outdoor rating: NRCan notes that an outdoor rating matters if you park outside, and the mounting should keep the unit clear of snowbanks and plough spray.
  • Certification: the Quebec government notes that chargers sold in Canada must be approved by an accredited certification body, ESA requires a recognized Canadian certification mark in Ontario, and NRCan warns that uncertified chargers can lead to injury or property damage.
  • ENERGY STAR and smart features: NRCan certifies Level 1 and Level 2 chargers under ENERGY STAR, with certified models using 40% less energy than standard ones in standby mode, and connected chargers can schedule charging and work with a load manager.
  • Plug-in or hardwired: some Level 2 units plug into a 240 V receptacle while others are wired in directly, and the electrician explains which suits your model and location.

Load manager or service upgrade: making room for an EV charger

When the load calculation shows little spare capacity, a bigger service isn't the only answer. EV charger permits and inspections in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia

In Ontario, ESA states that every EV charger installation requires an electrical permit, which it calls a notification, filed before the work starts, and that anyone you hire must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Installing an EV charger in a condo or multi-unit building

In a condo or rental building, the parking space, the electrical room and the wiring between them usually belong to the building or the condo corporation, not to you. NRCan points out that residents of multi-unit buildings face particular challenges because more decision makers are involved, and it publishes a guide to EV charging in these buildings. Start by asking the condo board or the landlord what is allowed, who pays for what, and whether a building-wide plan is already in the works.

The electrical work also changes scale. The building's capacity has to be assessed across the common areas and every unit, and load management is often what lets many chargers share limited capacity. In British Columbia, Technical Safety BC states that only licensed electrical contractors may legally install EV chargers in multi-unit and commercial buildings. Hydro-Québec publishes a guide to charging in multi-unit housing, and in Quebec the Écorecharge program also supports chargers in multi-unit dwellings.

Rebates for a home EV charger, including Quebec's Écorecharge grant

In Quebec, the government's Écorecharge program offers financial assistance for the purchase and installation of a home charging station. According to the program's pages, you must own an electric vehicle when you apply and provide proof that the station was installed, and since April 1, 2026 only connected stations capable of Level 2 charging, at 208 or 240 volts, are eligible. Elsewhere, help with a home charger depends on your province or territory, and often your utility, and programs open, change and close. Charging an EV at home through a Canadian winter: cold weather and cable care

Cold weather makes home charging more useful, not less. A cold battery charges more slowly and heating the cabin draws on it, so being able to plug in every night matters more in January than in July. Many vehicles let you schedule charging and preheat the cabin while still plugged in, which draws that energy from the house instead of the battery.

  • Mount the charger and its holster where snow sliding off the roof and plough spray won't bury them.
  • Hang the cable on its hook after every use instead of leaving it on the ground, where it can freeze into ice or be driven over.
  • Cable jackets stiffen in deep cold, so handle the cable gently and check it for cuts, cracks or crushed sections.
  • Keep the connector cap on and clear snow and ice before plugging in; never force a frozen connector.
  • If the cable, connector or charger is damaged, stop using it and call a licensed electrician; don't repair it yourself or substitute an extension cord.
