A ceiling fan moves air where people actually sit and sleep: a stuffy bedroom in July, a living room with a cathedral ceiling, a screened porch, a basement that never feels quite fresh. Installing one can be as simple as taking the place of an existing ceiling light, or as involved as running a new cable, adding a wall control and building support into a finished ceiling.

The difference comes down to what is above the ceiling. A fan is heavier than most light fixtures and it moves, so it needs an electrical box and a support approved for a fan, not just the box that held a light. Separate control of the fan and its light may call for an extra conductor between the switch and the ceiling, and a fan on a porch needs a rating for the moisture it will face.

Replacing a light fixture with a ceiling fan: the fan-rated electrical box and ceiling support

The box behind an ordinary ceiling light is meant for a fixture that stays still. A fan is heavier, and its spinning blades put constant motion and vibration on whatever holds it. The Electrical Safety Authority notes that a ceiling fan requires a specially approved junction box, different from the box for a standard light fixture, which provides extra room for the remote control and the support that keeps the fan secure so it won't wobble or fall.

Replacing a light with a fan therefore starts with that box. If it isn't approved for fan support, or is fastened only to the drywall, the electrician replaces it with a fan-rated box anchored to the framing, or with a brace spanning the joists that can often be slipped in through the existing opening. Ceiling fan winter mode: reversing direction to bring warm air down

Warm air rises and collects under the ceiling, especially in rooms with high or cathedral ceilings, open stairwells or a wood stove. Natural Resources Canada advises running a ceiling fan counterclockwise in summer and clockwise in winter. At low speed in winter, the fan gently pushes that warm air along the ceiling and down the walls without a noticeable breeze.

In summer, the counterclockwise setting creates the breeze that makes a room feel cooler. Most people want to turn on the light without starting the fan. How that's done depends on the wiring already between the switch and the ceiling box, which the electrician checks before you buy a fan or a control.

  • One switch and pull chains: the simplest setup, with the wall switch cutting power to both and the chains choosing speed and light.
  • Two wall switches: separate control needs an additional switched conductor to the ceiling, which may mean a new cable if the existing one has only one.

Natural Resources Canada states that an ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fan uses 60% less energy, on average, than a standard model. Certified fans use improved motors and blade designs, can reverse the motor and airflow direction, and have components warrantied for at least three years; some also offer connected features for control from a smartphone or voice assistant. Look for the ENERGY STAR mark when comparing models, and pair the fan's light with LEDs.

Ceiling fan installation rules: licensed electricians for new boxes and new circuits

Installing a ceiling fan is electrical work, and the box and support it hangs from are part of it. ESA advises leaving the job to a professional so it is done to code. In Ontario, Licensed Electrical Contractors are the only businesses legally authorized to do electrical work in your home, and they file a notification with ESA before starting. In Quebec, electrical work for others is reserved for contractors licensed through the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ).

A licensed electrician is especially important when the job goes beyond a straight swap: a new box or brace, a new cable or circuit, an added switch, or a fan on a porch or in a bathroom, where the fan's location rating and the electrical code's requirements for damp areas apply.
