A home battery stores electricity so you can use it later. Installed near the panel, with an inverter and the controls that decide when it charges and discharges, it can keep essential circuits running through an outage, store the output of solar panels for the evening and, where your utility's rates vary through the day, shift some consumption to cheaper hours. Some systems back up a few chosen circuits through a dedicated sub-panel; others are sized to carry more of the house.

For Canadian homes, backup is often the first reason: ice storms and summer windstorms can leave whole neighbourhoods without power, and a battery takes over quietly, with no fuel to store and no exhaust. Paired with solar, it lets you keep more of your own production instead of sending it all to the grid.

A home battery is an electrical installation tied to your service, and often to the grid, so it calls for approved equipment, a licensed electrical contractor, work that is notified or declared, and the utility's authorization before it connects.

What a home battery does: backup power, solar storage and time-of-use shifting

Hydro-Québec lists batteries among self-generation equipment, both as storage for later use and as backup that takes over automatically in an outage to power essential appliances.

  • Backup power: when the grid goes down, the system isolates itself from it and powers the circuits it backs up, often essentials such as the fridge, the furnace blower, lights, the sump pump and the internet.
  • Solar storage: daytime solar output charges the battery, and the stored energy covers the evening and night instead of going to the grid; our solar panel installation page covers the panels themselves.
  • Time-of-use shifting: where rates vary through the day, the battery can charge during cheaper hours and discharge during peaks; whether that pays off depends on your rate.
  • Whole-home or partial backup: a battery sized and wired for most of the house, or one feeding a critical-loads sub-panel so a smaller system lasts longer.
  • AC-coupled or DC-coupled: a battery with its own inverter that works alongside an existing or new solar system, or one that shares a hybrid inverter with the panels.

Home battery or standby generator: comparing backup power options

A battery and a generator both keep the lights on, in different ways. A battery switches over silently, needs no fuel, produces no exhaust and can go in a garage or utility room where the code and the manufacturer allow; its limit is the energy stored, and a long winter outage, when solar output is low, can drain it. A standby generator runs as long as it has fuel, which suits outages that last days and heavy loads such as electric heating, but it needs fuel, an outdoor location away from openings, regular maintenance and a transfer switch.

Home battery installation: location, fire safety and the manufacturer's requirements

Where the battery goes is set by the electrical code, the manufacturer's installation manual and sometimes local fire and building rules. Common spots are a garage wall, a utility room or an exterior wall, with clearances around the unit, protection from vehicle impact and attention to temperature: many batteries have an operating range, and a cold garage or an exterior wall can fall outside it in midwinter. Bedrooms and other living spaces are not the place for one.

The equipment itself must be approved. ESA's bulletin on energy storage systems states that every system for use or sale in Ontario has to be approved, for example through certification by an accredited body to the ANSI/CAN/UL 9540 standard for energy storage systems, or through a field evaluation. Ask the contractor to show you the certification markings and to follow the manufacturer's instructions for mounting, ventilation, disconnects and labelling, since those are part of what the inspector checks.

Battery storage permits and utility interconnection in Ontario and Quebec

In Ontario, installing an energy storage system requires a notification of work to ESA, filed by the Licensed Electrical Contractor, and ESA inspects the system once it is installed. ESA's bulletin adds that interconnection must follow the supply authority's requirements and that a connection authorization is required, so your local distribution utility is part of the process whenever the battery can operate in parallel with the grid. The utility needs to know about such systems because back-feeding a line during an outage can endanger its crews.

In Quebec, Hydro-Québec says never to connect self-generation equipment yourself. You hire an electrical contractor who is a member of the CMEQ, the contractor submits your application to Hydro-Québec, a master electrician carries out compliance tests after installation, and you must obtain Hydro-Québec's final authorization before connecting the equipment to the grid. In British Columbia, electrical installation permits come from Technical Safety BC.

Home battery rebates in Ontario and Quebec

In Ontario, the Home Renovation Savings program, offered through Save on Energy with support from the Ontario government, lists a rebate for battery storage. The battery must be paired with a new solar PV system, sized for that system and designed mainly to store the solar electricity rather than power from the grid, so a battery added on its own doesn't fit those conditions. The program's solar page sets the rebate at three hundred dollars per kilowatt-hour of storage, up to five thousand dollars and no more than half of the costs, for owners of single-family homes connected to the Ontario grid, and written pre-approval is required before buying or installing anything.

In Quebec, Hydro-Québec's financial aid for self-generation, announced in April 2026 and requested through LogisVert, is aimed at solar panels, and the announcement doesn't mention batteries. Program rules change, so confirm eligibility on the official page before you sign, and ask the contractor to handle any pre-approval.

Living with a home battery: backup reserve, monitoring and cold weather

  • Set a backup reserve so the battery keeps enough charge for an outage instead of cycling it all for solar or rate savings, and raise it before a storm.
  • Check the monitoring app or display now and then for faults, and let the installer apply software updates.
  • Keep the area around the unit clear, dry and free of stored items, and never open the enclosure; service is for trained technicians.
  • Ask how the battery behaves in the cold and whether its location stays within the manufacturer's temperature range all winter.
  • Keep the warranty terms, which often depend on an installation that follows the manufacturer's instructions.

Can a home battery power my whole house during an outage?

It depends on its capacity, the inverter's output and what you ask of it. Many systems back up a set of essential circuits; electric heating, a range or a well pump draw a lot and are hard to carry for long. The electrician sizes the system from the loads you want to keep.

Do I need solar panels to install a home battery?

No. A battery can charge from the grid and provide backup on its own. Pairing it with solar lets it store your own production, and in Ontario the Home Renovation Savings rebate only applies to a battery installed with a new solar system.

Is a home battery safe inside the house?

Approved equipment installed according to the code and the manufacturer's instructions is designed for residential use. In Ontario, ESA requires energy storage systems to be approved, for example through certification to ANSI/CAN/UL 9540. Location, clearances and temperature are settled with the electrician, and living spaces are not the place for one.

Does Hydro-Québec have to approve a home battery?
