   In two provinces. British Columbia requires a licence for anyone who engages in home inspection activity, and Consumer Protection BC publishes a licence check you can use before you book. Alberta licenses both home inspection businesses and individual inspectors, under its Consumer Protection Act and the Home Inspection Business Regulation.

   Everywhere else in Canada, no. Ontario passed the Home Inspection Act in 2017 to license inspectors, but it was never proclaimed into force, so an Ontario home inspector needs no provincial licence at all. What they may carry instead is a designation from an industry association — voluntary, and worth exactly what that association’s standards and complaints process are worth.

   So outside BC and Alberta the checking is yours to do. Ask which standard of practice they inspect to, what the report explicitly excludes, whether they carry errors and omissions insurance, and to see a full sample report before you book rather than a summary page.
