A proper installation starts with measurement, not shopping. The installer walks the house with a survey app or meter, records signal strength and interference room by room, notes where the Internet line enters and where cable can travel, and asks which rooms matter most: the home office, the bedrooms where people stream, the entrance where the doorbell and cameras sit. The result is a plan for how many units are needed and exactly where they go.

The router or main unit often needs to move from the basement corner where the provider's line comes in to a more central spot, which usually means running a network cable from the modem to the new location; that's often simpler than asking the provider to move its line. Once the units are in, the installer repeats the walk test, checks that phones hand off smoothly from one unit to the next, confirms speeds in the key rooms and leaves a simple map of where everything is.

Mesh Wi-Fi vs. wired access points: how each installation differs

A mesh installation is quick and needs little or no construction: units sit on shelves or furniture, each near an outlet, and link to one another wirelessly or by cable. It's the natural choice for a finished house where opening walls isn't welcome, and units can be moved or added later. The trade-offs are visible boxes and power cords in several rooms and, without cable between the units, speeds that drop the further a unit sits from the router.

Wired access points mount on ceilings or high on walls, each fed by a network cable that also powers it from a network switch, and they're usually managed together from one controller or app. The installation takes more work, since cable must reach every unit, but the result is discreet and consistent, and it's easy to plan during a new build, a basement finish or a major renovation. Either approach gives one network name throughout the house when it's set up correctly.

Ethernet backhaul for Wi-Fi: wiring the link between mesh units and access points

Backhaul is the link that carries traffic from each mesh unit or access point back to the router. Over the air, it shares radio capacity with your devices, so every wireless hop costs speed; over a cable, the radios are left entirely to phones, laptops and TVs. That's why installers try to wire at least the units furthest from the router, even when the rest of the system stays wireless.

  • Look for existing routes first: an unfinished basement ceiling, closets stacked one above the other, the attic or an old cable TV run.
  • Where new network cable can't reach, adapters that carry a network over existing coaxial cable often make a better backhaul than a wireless hop.
  • Choose mesh units with a spare network port, so wired backhaul can be added later without replacing the system.

Internet provider equipment vs. your own router or mesh system

Most providers supply a gateway that combines a modem and a Wi-Fi router. It's simple and supported by the provider, but its location is dictated by where the line enters, and some settings may be locked. Adding your own mesh system or router behind it without adjusting anything creates two routers in a row, often called double NAT, which can cause trouble with gaming, video calls, cameras and some smart home apps, and leaves two Wi-Fi networks competing in the same house.

The usual fix is to put the provider's gateway in bridge mode so your own system does the routing or, if the provider doesn't allow that, to switch off the gateway's Wi-Fi and let your system handle all the wireless. Check whether the provider's equipment is rented, since it must be returned when you switch, and whether support will still help once your own equipment is in the chain. Owning the router also means owning its updates, so choose one that installs them automatically.

  • Keep the modem, router and switch where visitors and tenants can't reach them, as the Cyber Centre recommends restricting physical access.
  • Turn on event logging if the router offers it, and replace a router that no longer receives firmware updates.
  • Put smart plugs, cameras, TVs and other connected devices on the guest network or a separate one, as the Cyber Centre and Get Cyber Safe both suggest.
  • Leave the owner a written record of network names, passphrases and admin accounts, and remove the installer's access.

Extending Wi-Fi outdoors: cameras, patios and detached buildings

Outdoor cameras, a video doorbell, the patio and a backyard office are often the weakest points on a network, because exterior walls, brick and foil-faced insulation soak up much of the signal before it gets outside. An outdoor-rated access point under the eaves, fed and powered by a single network cable, gives the most reliable result; the installer aims it toward the yard and seals the cable's path through the wall.

For a detached garage, workshop or studio, the choice is between a buried cable, which is the most dependable but requires digging and having underground services located first, and a point-to-point wireless bridge: a pair of small outdoor antennas aimed at each other, with an access point inside the second building. A bridge needs a clear line of sight, so trees that fill in with leaves each spring can weaken a link that worked perfectly in winter.

Do I still need my Internet provider's modem if I install mesh Wi-Fi?

Usually, yes. The provider's modem or gateway connects to the line, and your mesh system connects behind it. To avoid two routers in a row, the gateway is set to bridge mode or its Wi-Fi is switched off, depending on what the provider allows.

How many mesh units or access points will my house need?

It depends on the layout, the construction, the number of floors and where you need a signal, not only on floor area. A site survey before buying avoids both dead zones and units you don't need.

Will a new Wi-Fi system make my Internet faster?

Only if the bottleneck is inside the house. Test the speed with a computer plugged into the modem: if it's already slow there, the issue lies with the plan or the provider, and new Wi-Fi won't fix it.

Can mesh units connect over my existing coaxial cable?

Often, using adapters that carry a network signal over coax, provided the cable reaches the right rooms and works alongside the provider's service. The installer tests each run before relying on it.

Should I hide my Wi-Fi network name?
