Home networking covers everything between the Internet line entering the house and the devices that use it: the router, a mesh system or access points, network cable inside the walls, and the settings that keep it all secure. It's the job to call when video calls freeze in the home office, the Wi-Fi drops in the basement bedroom, the detached garage or the backyard has no signal, or a renovation opens the walls and it's the right time to run cable.

Canadian houses are hard on Wi-Fi. Poured concrete foundations, brick, foil-backed insulation and heating ducts block or bounce the signal, and many homes spread over several levels, with a finished basement and a garage that were never planned for wireless. A good installer measures the signal room by room, decides where cable makes more sense than wireless, puts equipment where it actually helps, and leaves the network documented and secured.

Network cable is low-voltage work that doesn't carry household current. Adding an outlet, a circuit or a hardwired power supply for the equipment is electrical work for a licensed electrician.

Signs your home Wi-Fi network needs an upgrade

Slow Internet isn't always the provider's fault. Often the connection reaching the house is fine and the problem is how the signal spreads inside it. A simple test is to compare the speed right next to the router with the speed in the problem room: if the gap is large, the fix is in the house, not in your plan.

Smart home devices also add up: each plug, bulb, lock and camera keeps its own connection to the router. Most send little data, but cameras and streaming devices are heavy users, and some routers struggle with a long list of connections. An installer can check the load and move some devices to cable or a dedicated hub.

  • Dead zones in the basement, an upstairs bedroom, a sunroom or the far end of a long bungalow.
  • Video calls that freeze or drop when someone moves from one room to another.
  • Streaming that buffers in the evening, when the whole household is online at once.
  • Smart locks, thermostats or cameras that go offline or respond slowly.
  • An older router that no longer receives updates or doesn't support current security settings.

Mesh Wi-Fi, wired access points or range extenders: which fits your home

When one router can't cover the whole house, there are several ways to extend the signal. The main difference is how the extra units link back to the router. In a small apartment, a well-placed router is usually enough; in a multi-level house with a concrete basement, mesh or access points generally do better than extenders.

  • Range extenders: plug in between the router and the dead zone and repeat the signal; simple, but they often slow the connection and sometimes create a separate network name.
  • Mesh systems: several units that form one network under one name and hand your phone from one to the next as you move; they need no new cable and suit most houses.
  • Wired mesh: the same units linked to each other by network cable, which frees the wireless link for your devices and keeps speed up far from the router.
  • Ceiling or wall access points: wired back to the router or a network switch and often powered through the same cable, the most consistent option for large homes and new builds.
  • Coax or powerline adapters: carry the network over existing cable TV or electrical wiring, a fallback worth testing where new cable isn't practical.

Router placement and Wi-Fi coverage planning

The router often ends up where the Internet line enters the house: a basement corner, the utility room or behind the TV. That's rarely the best spot. Wi-Fi radiates outward, and every floor, wall and appliance in the way weakens it, so the installer maps signal strength through the house before deciding where equipment goes, running a cable from the entry point if needed.

  • Put the router or main unit as central as possible, at mid-height and in the open rather than in a cabinet or a closet.
  • Keep it away from metal, mirrors, aquariums, microwave ovens and the electrical panel.
  • In a house on several levels, plan for a unit on each floor, ideally with a clear path up the stairwell.
  • Space mesh units so each still gets a strong signal from the last, rather than placing one in the dead zone itself.
  • Aim ceiling access points at the rooms people use most, such as the kitchen, the home office and the living room.

Ethernet cabling and structured wiring during a renovation

A cable is still the fastest and most reliable way to connect a device. Computers, TVs, game consoles, camera recorders and access points all benefit from a wired connection, which also frees the Wi-Fi for phones. When walls or ceilings are open during a renovation or a basement finishing project, running cable is far easier than fishing it through finished walls later.

Structured wiring brings every cable back to one central spot, usually a small panel or shelf in the basement or utility room, where the Internet line, the router and a network switch meet. Ask for a cable category suited to today's speeds, more than one run to key rooms, empty conduit to the attic or basement for future needs, data cable kept apart from electrical wiring, and both ends labelled. Where cable passes through a fire-rated wall or ceiling, such as the one between the house and an attached garage, the opening must be sealed with suitable materials so the separation still does its job.

Securing your home network: WPA3, router firmware and a guest network

The router is the front door for every connected device in the house. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security notes that WPA2 or the newer WPA3 provide strong encryption between the router and your devices, and recommends keeping the router's firmware up to date so the latest security patch is installed. Get Cyber Safe's basics apply here too: change default usernames and passwords, and turn on automatic updates.

  • Choose WPA3 if the router and your devices support it, WPA2 otherwise, and never leave the network open.
  • Change the default passwords for both the Wi-Fi network and the router's settings page, using a passphrase where possible, as the Cyber Centre advises.
  • Turn on automatic firmware updates if the router offers them, and replace a router that no longer gets them.
  • Disable Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), whose PIN method the Cyber Centre warns can be cracked by someone within range.
  • Disable remote management unless you need it, so no one can reach the router's settings from outside.
  • Set up a guest network for visitors and smart devices, which the Cyber Centre says avoids sharing passwords and reduces the risk to your main devices.

Low-voltage network cabling vs electrical work: who does what

Network cable, coaxial cable and small plug-in power adapters are low-voltage work that doesn't carry household current, and network installers commonly handle it. Rules on who may install communication cabling vary by province, though, so ask the installer what licence or certification applies where you live.

Anything that touches the home's wiring is different: a new outlet for a network cabinet, a dedicated circuit for an equipment rack or a hardwired power supply is electrical work, and not a do-it-yourself job. Ontario's ESA says you can legally hire only a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or an electrician working for one, for electrical work in your home. In Quebec, the CMEQ warns that doing electrical work for others requires being a licensed electrical contractor. During a renovation, coordinate the two trades so data cable and electrical wiring are planned together and kept apart in the walls.

Outdoor Wi-Fi coverage for the yard, garage and shed, in every season

Outdoor cameras, a video doorbell, a detached garage, a backyard office or the pool area all need a signal that indoor equipment often can't push through exterior walls. Options include an outdoor-rated access point under the eaves, a mesh unit near a window facing the yard, or a buried or overhead cable to a detached building.

Outdoor equipment has to survive winter: choose units rated for outdoor use and for your region's cold, seal every cable entry through the exterior wall against air and water, use cable made for outdoor or direct-burial use, and keep it clear of ice falling from the roof. A new exterior outlet, or cable run alongside power to a detached building, is a job to coordinate with a licensed electrician, and underground services must be located before anyone digs.

Is a mesh system better than a Wi-Fi extender?

In most multi-room homes, yes. A mesh system forms one network under one name and moves your devices between units smoothly, while an extender repeats the signal and often slows it. Where cable can link the mesh units, performance improves further.

Should my Wi-Fi use WPA3?

Yes, if your router and devices support it. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security notes that WPA2 and the newer WPA3 both provide strong encryption; an older device that only handles WPA2 may need a transition setting or a replacement.

Can network cable be run without opening walls?

Often. Installers use unfinished basement ceilings, the attic, closets and existing cable paths to fish cable into walls with little patching. Where that isn't practical, coax or powerline adapters can serve as a fallback.

Should smart home devices go on a guest network?

Where possible, yes. Get Cyber Safe recommends separating smart devices from your main network, and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security suggests a guest network for guests and connected devices. Some hubs need to share a network with your phone during setup, so ask the installer to plan for that.
