What affects the price

- How far the infestation has spread, and how many rooms or units are involved
- Whether exclusion work is included: sealing entry points, screening vents, one-way doors
- Repairs to the soffit, roof edge or vent that an animal came through
- Preparation, and whether the company does any of it or all of it falls to you
- Access to crawl spaces, attics and behind built-in kitchen units
- Follow-up inspections and the length of the guarantee
- Apartment or condo, where treating one unit without the neighbours rarely works
- Season — wasps peak in late summer, mice move in with the first cold nights
The pest sets the price
A wasp nest on a soffit is a ladder, a treatment and twenty minutes. Mice are an inspection, bait stations and exclusion work to stop them coming back in. Bed bugs are a program: two or three treatments spaced by the insect's life cycle, plus preparation in every room. Cockroaches are similar. Carpenter ants mean finding the moisture that attracted them, which can turn into a different trade's job entirely.
That is why "how much is an exterminator" has no answer. What you can compare is whether two quotes are for the same number of visits and the same follow-up.
One treatment or a program
Ask this first, and get the answer in writing. A single treatment is a one-time visit with no promise about what happens next. A program includes return visits at set intervals and usually a guarantee: if the pest is back within a stated period, they come back at no charge.
For bed bugs and cockroaches, a single treatment is very rarely enough — the eggs are not killed by the first application, which is why the follow-up is scheduled around hatching rather than around your calendar. A company that quotes one visit for bed bugs is either not treating them properly or is going to charge again.
The work you have to do
Preparation is real work and it is yours. For bed bugs, that means bagging and heat-treating textiles, emptying furniture, moving beds away from walls and keeping the room accessible afterwards. For a kitchen cockroach treatment, it means emptying cupboards. A company that hands you a preparation sheet is doing it properly; one that does not is setting up the failure it will blame on you.
Who is allowed to apply what
The products are federally regulated, but the people applying them are not. Health Canada is explicit that the provinces and territories are responsible for the training and certification of pesticide vendors and applicators, working from a national standard. So the licence you want to see is a provincial one, and the category matters — structural pest control is its own area of certification.
Ask for the licence number, ask what is being applied, and ask for the label information for anything used inside. It is a reasonable question, and a company that will not answer it is the wrong company to have spraying a room your children sleep in.
Wildlife is a different service
Raccoons, squirrels and bats are not an insecticide problem. The work is one-way doors, finding every entry point, and repairing the soffit, vent or roof edge they came through — which is where most of the cost sits and why the quote often reads more like a roofer's than an exterminator's. Timing matters as well. Provincial wildlife rules govern what a company may do with an animal it catches, and a den with dependent young changes the plan entirely — ask what they will do if they find one, because the answer decides how long the job takes and what it costs.
What a fair quote contains
- the pest, and how the company confirmed it
- the number of visits and the interval between them
- what is applied, where, and any re-entry time before the room is safe to use
- the preparation expected of you before each visit
- the guarantee period, and what voids it

Frequently asked questions
Why does bed bug treatment take more than one visit?
Because eggs survive the first application. Proper treatment is timed around the hatch, which means a second and often a third visit at set intervals. A one-visit quote for bed bugs is either not a real treatment or will be followed by another invoice.
Is the technician licensed?
Ask, and ask for the number. Health Canada regulates the pesticide products, but the provinces and territories are responsible for certifying the people who apply them, following a national standard. Structural pest control is its own certification category.
Can I just buy something at the hardware store?
For a few ants or a single wasp nest you can reach safely, sometimes. For bed bugs, cockroaches or mice in the walls, over-the-counter products tend to scatter the problem rather than end it, and repeated retail attempts usually cost more than one professional program.
What should the guarantee cover?
A stated period during which return visits are free if the pest comes back, and a plain description of what voids it. Get the period, the number of included return visits and the exclusions in writing before the first treatment.
