Translation and language covers translators, certified translators and interpreters, for personal documents, legal and business documents, websites and software, meetings and events.

Translation is written; interpreting is spoken, in person or by phone or video. Certified translations are often required for immigration applications, courts and official records, and there is no single statutory translator’s licence in the UK.

Where a document is not in English or Welsh, government guidance is that the translator confirms in writing that it is a “true and accurate translation of the original document”, with the date and their full name and contact details. The organisation asking for the document may have its own rules about who it accepts, so check with them first. Ask which language pairs a translator works in and in which direction, how they check quality, and how long the work will take.
