A lawyer must hold a current practising certificate to engage in legal practice, and certificates are issued by the designated regulatory authority in each state or territory: the Queensland Law Society in Queensland, for example, and the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner in Victoria, which also publishes a Register of Lawyers you can search. New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia operate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law, overseen by the Legal Services Council. Check a lawyer’s certificate with the authority for your state or territory.
When you compare lawyers, look for experience in the area of law your matter involves and in the state or territory where it will be heard, ask how they charge and whether a first consultation has a fee, and wait until the firm has confirmed it can act for you before sharing the details of your matter.
